Chapter 3 - The Lie With a Microphone

Michael did not apologize for missing the first half of his son’s party. He did not ask where Leo was. He did not even look embarrassed when my parents stared at him from beside the cake table. He walked straight to the emcee, took the microphone, and turned toward the guests with the confidence of a man who believed volume could become truth.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” he said, “today isn’t just my son’s birthday.”
The entire garden went still.
My stomach tightened before he said the next line. Some part of me knew. Not the exact words, maybe, but the shape of the humiliation he had prepared. Vanessa slipped her arm around his, chin lifted, eyes shining with the kind of fake sympathy cruel people wear when they want witnesses.
“I’d also like to introduce the woman who should have been standing beside him from the very beginning,” Michael continued.

I moved toward him. “Michael, don’t.”
He looked past me as if I were staff.
“This is Leo’s real mother.”
Gasps spread through the backyard. Someone dropped a fork near the dessert table. My mother covered her mouth. My father stood so quickly his chair scraped the patio. Business partners who had smiled over champagne ten minutes earlier now watched me with confusion, pity, and horror.
Vanessa took the microphone. “I’m sorry, Andrea,” she said, and there was nothing sorry in her voice. “Five years ago, I was carrying Michael’s baby. You wanted an heir so badly that you paid me, took my son, and pretended he was yours.”
My breath left me.
It was not just a lie. It was a strategy.
They were not only trying to humiliate me. They were trying to make me unstable in front of everyone who mattered to my company, my family, and my child’s future.

Then Vanessa knelt in front of Leo.
That was their mistake.
