Chapter 5 - Lock the Doors

Judge Hart stared at Richard for a long moment. The courtroom seemed to understand before she spoke that the hearing had crossed into another category. This was no longer about who kept the house or which spouse had behaved badly. It was about forged documents, hidden medical history, financial coercion, and the possibility that a woman had been publicly labeled unstable to conceal crimes committed against her.
Richard finally sat, but only because his attorney pulled at his sleeve. His face had lost all color. Chloe had moved a full step away from him now, one hand at the necklace around her throat. My grandmother’s necklace. I watched her touch it and understand, slowly, that the jewelry had not been a romantic gift. It had been stolen proof of how far Richard believed he could reach.
The judge looked toward the bailiff. Then she spoke four words that changed the room.
“Bailiff… lock the doors.”

Nobody moved for half a second. Then the bailiff stepped to the back. The sound of the courtroom doors closing was not loud, but it felt final. Richard stared at the judge as if she had broken a rule he thought protected men like him. Reporters in the back row lowered their phones. Attorneys exchanged looks. Chloe sat down slowly, no longer beside Richard but at the very edge of the bench.
Judge Hart turned to Arthur. “Mr. Collins, are the medical records accompanied by sworn physician statements?”
“Yes, Your Honor.”
“And the forensic analysis?”
“Certified and filed under seal.”
She looked at Richard’s table. “Mr. Vance, given the allegations now before this court, I am referring the matter for immediate review by the district attorney’s office. No party is to leave until identities and statements are secured.”

Richard opened his mouth, then closed it.
For the first time since our marriage began, a room full of people watched him realize he could not talk his way out.
