After I said, “This is no longer a divorce hearing,” the courtroom stopped feeling like Richard’s stage. The judge’s face hardened as Arthur placed the folder before the clerk. The bailiff moved closer to Richard, who was still standing, still pointing, still trying to shout over the evidence before anyone could read it.

“No!” Richard snapped. “Don’t listen to her. She’s been planning this. She’s unstable.”

Judge Hart lowered her glasses and looked at him. “Mr. Vance, sit down.”

He did not.

That was his first public mistake. Richard knew how to behave when winning. He did not know how to behave when cornered. Chloe slowly pulled her hand away from his sleeve. He noticed and turned toward her with a look so sharp she stepped back without thinking. The gallery saw it. The judge saw it. Arthur saw it. More importantly, Chloe saw it.

Arthur opened the medical summary, keeping all documents angled away from the public gallery. “The records show repeated treatment over several years, consistent explanations made under restricted conditions, and physician notes documenting the plaintiff’s presence during multiple visits. The forensic report also identifies forged signatures on three major asset transfers submitted by Mr. Vance’s counsel.”

Richard’s lead attorney stood. “Your Honor, we need time to review—”

“You submitted psychological reports accusing this woman of fabrication,” the judge said coldly. “You may sit.”

The attorney sat.

I closed my blouse modestly, button by button, while the room watched in silence. I had imagined that showing the scars would make me feel exposed. Instead, covering them again felt like taking ownership of them back. They were no longer Richard’s secret. They were evidence he could not intimidate into silence.

Richard whispered something to his attorney, but panic had made him careless. The microphone near his table caught enough.

“She wasn’t supposed to have those records.”
