Chapter 1 - The Blouse

The moment I unbuttoned the collar of my cream silk blouse, Richard Vance finally stopped smiling. Until then, he had been sitting across the courtroom like a man attending someone else’s defeat. Dark suit, polished shoes, expensive attorneys, and Chloe beside him in a white blazer, wearing my grandmother’s antique necklace as if betrayal had come with inheritance rights.
I stood at the witness area with my hands trembling near the fabric, every eye in the courtroom following the movement. The first button opened. Then the second. I pulled the collar just far enough for the judge to see what Richard had spent years hiding behind money, charm, and carefully forged documents. Old healed scars crossed my collarbone and upper chest, then continued along the edges of my arms. They were not fresh. They were not theatrical. They were permanent, quiet evidence of a marriage he had rewritten as instability.

The courtroom gasped. Someone in the gallery stood halfway from their seat. Chloe covered her mouth, and for the first time all morning, she looked less like a mistress enjoying victory and more like a woman realizing she had been sitting beside a monster. Richard jumped up behind the rail, pointing at me. “She’s lying!”
I did not turn toward him. I held myself steady at the witness microphone and looked directly at Judge Eleanor Hart. My voice was soft, but it carried through the room. “Your Honor, this is no longer a divorce hearing.”
The judge leaned forward, her face pale.

Richard took one step as if he could still reach the story before it left his control. A bailiff moved into the aisle. My attorney, Arthur Collins, placed a sealed medical folder on the table.
“The records are already filed,” he said.
