Chapter 3 - Arthur’s Folder

Arthur Collins was not the most dramatic attorney in the city, which was exactly why I hired him. He did not slam tables. He did not perform outrage for reporters. He built cases the way engineers build bridges: support by support, stress tested, impossible to collapse once weight hit them. When Richard’s side submitted the psychological evaluations, Arthur did not object immediately. He let them speak. He let them overreach. He let Richard’s attorneys describe me as unstable while the sealed folder sat untouched in front of him.

The first part of the hearing went exactly as Richard wanted. His lawyers claimed I had invented years of abuse to gain leverage in the divorce. They presented asset transfers as routine marital planning. They described Chloe as a “supportive partner” who had entered Richard’s life after the marriage had already ended emotionally. Richard lowered his eyes at the right moments, pretending sorrow. Chloe placed one hand over his as if she were comforting a widower rather than sitting beside a married man who had stolen from his wife.

Then Arthur rose. “Your Honor, before my client’s statement, the defense requests permission to enter previously sealed medical records, authenticated photographs, emergency intake summaries, and forensic handwriting analysis tied to the asset transfers.” Richard’s smile tightened, but only a little. He still believed he had buried everything that could hurt him.

The judge nodded for Arthur to proceed.

That was when he looked at me.

No speech. No encouragement. Just a small nod, the one we had agreed on months earlier. I stood and walked to the witness area. My legs felt distant from my body, but they carried me. I knew the courtroom would react. I knew Richard would deny. I knew Chloe would learn in public what kind of man had bought her gifts with my stolen money. Still, my hands shook when I reached for the first button.

Courage is not the absence of shaking. Sometimes it is letting everyone see your hands shake while you tell the truth anyway.
