Chapter 9 - THE TIES THAT BIND

Dominic’s breath caught in his throat. The room around him seemed to disappear entirely. The doctors, the nurses, the monitors, and the storm outside faded into white noise.

He looked down at the baby, then up at Hannah.

Hannah looked back at him, her dark brown eyes filled with an overwhelming mixture of maternal love, profound guilt, and heartbreaking fear.

"Eight months ago..." Dominic whispered, his voice trembling as he reached out with one finger, gently touching the baby’s soft, warm hand. The newborn's tiny fingers instantly curled tightly around Dominic's index finger. "...you knew you were pregnant."

Hannah nodded slowly, a fresh sob escaping her lips. "I found out two days before I left, Dom. The war between your family and the syndicate was escalating. People were planting bombs under your cars... capos were being executed in their homes..."

She squeezed his hand tighter.

"I knew if I stayed, if the city found out that the great Dominic Vale was having a son, he would be born with a target on his back," Hannah wept softly, her voice barely audible over the baby's soft cooing. "They would have used him to break you. They would have killed him to take your throne."

Dominic stared at her, the realization striking him with the force of a physical blow. She hadn't abandoned him because she stopped loving him. She hadn't run away out of fear of his dark life. She had sacrificed everything—her comfort, her security, her love for him—to hide in the shadows for eight long months just to keep his heir alive.

"So you hid in a public hospital... under a fake name..." Dominic said, his dark eyes brimming with unshed tears.

"I kept your name on his emergency chart..." Hannah whispered, looking toward the door where the Older Nurse stood watching silently. "Because if anything happened to me during delivery... I needed him to go to the only man in the world strong enough to protect him."

Dominic leaned down, pressing his lips gently against Hannah’s sweat-dampened forehead, holding her and their newborn son close to his chest.

"Nobody touches either of you ever again," Dominic vowed, his voice laced with an iron clad, absolute authority. "I swear it on my life."
