Chapter 2 - IT JUST DID

Every single man in the conference room flinched. Carter leaned back, his eyes wide as he watched Dominic’s face drain of all color.

Dominic didn't say another word into the phone. His chest heaved as he shoved the mobile device into his pocket, his hands moving with frantic, uncharacteristic urgency. He reached for his heavy black wool coat hanging on the nearby mahogany rack, throwing it over his broad shoulders in one swift motion.

"Dom!" Carter shouted, springing up from his seat and stepping into Dominic’s path near the double glass doors of the boardroom. "Dom, look at me! You can't walk out of this room! The Commission is waiting on the phone line, the dock agreements are unassigned, and if you leave right now, three territorial wars break out before sunrise! This can't wait!"

Dominic kept walking, his stride long, relentless, and completely unstoppable. He didn't even slow down as he closed the distance between himself and his chief lieutenant.

"It just did," Dominic spat, his voice dropping into a lethal register that made Carter instinctively take half a step back.

Dominic pushed past Carter, brushing his shoulder hard enough to send the lieutenant spinning slightly. He hit the brass push-bar of the executive suite doors, flinging them open and striding out into the marble elevator lobby without looking back a single time.

Behind him, the conference room dissolved into chaotic shouting, but Dominic heard none of it. All he heard was the echo of Hannah’s trembling voice over the phone line. My baby is being born.

Eight months ago, thirty-one-year-old Hannah Reed had packed no bags, left no note, and vanished from his fortified estate in the middle of a rainstorm. He had burned through millions of dollars, hired federal trackers, and combed every major city on the Eastern seaboard searching for her, assuming she had been taken by his enemies or had fled from the dangerous reality of his life.

He had never considered the possibility that she was running to protect a life growing inside her.

Dominic slammed his hand against the elevator call button, his heart hammering against his ribs like a caged beast as the steel doors slid open.
