Chapter 10 - THE SHADOW OVER LAKESIDE

Ten minutes later, the delivery room had been cleared of emergency staff. The baby slept peacefully in a small plastic bassinet beside Hannah’s bed, wrapped tightly in his warm blanket. Hannah had fallen into a deep, exhausted sleep, her hand still resting near Dominic’s arm on the mattress.

Dominic stood quietly near the high glass window of the private recovery room, looking out at the rain-soaked skyline of Chicago. He had stripped off his wet shirt, wearing a clean surgical scrub top given to him by the staff, his dark hair still slightly damp.

The door to the room clicked open softly.

Carter Wynn stepped inside, his black suit dripping wet, his face pale as he carried a secure tablet in his hands. He stopped three paces behind Dominic, keeping his voice extremely low so as not to wake Hannah or the baby.

"Dom," Carter whispered urgently. "The conference room is in chaos. The Commission knows you walked out. Two of our rival capos have already mobilized crews toward the docks."

Dominic didn't turn around immediately. He kept his eyes fixed on the reflection of his sleeping family in the glass window.

"Tell them to stand down," Dominic said softly, his voice devoid of anger, holding only a cold, terrifying absolute clarity.

Carter blinked. "Dom, if we yield the docks—"

"I didn't say yield, Carter," Dominic turned slowly around, his dark eyes locking onto his lieutenant with a lethal, ancient power that made Carter’s breath catch in his throat. "Tell them that if a single armed man steps foot near my territory tonight, I won't just sign a paper. I will personally hunt down every capo on the Commission and erase their families from this city."

Carter stared at his boss, seeing a transformation far more dangerous than the cold businessman who had sat at the conference table an hour ago. Dominic Vale was no longer just fighting for land or money. He was a father protecting a bloodline.

"Understood, Boss," Carter said, bowing his head respectfully. "I'll handle the Commission."

Carter turned and exited the room, closing the door silently behind him.

Dominic walked back to the side of the bed. He sat down in the armchair beside Hannah, looking down at his son’s tiny face. He reached out, gently pulling the soft blue blanket higher around the infant's shoulders.

Outside, the storm began to fade, the heavy thunder rolling away over Lake Michigan, replaced by the quiet, golden light of the approaching dawn breaking over the Chicago horizon.

Dominic Vale took a deep breath, resting his hand over Hannah’s, ready to face whatever war awaited him outside, knowing that his true kingdom was finally safe inside this room.
