Chapter 6 - The Tower at Dawn

By 4:30 AM, Maya’s armored SUV pulled up to the curb outside Reed-Vance Tower, a seventy-story glass-and-steel monolith dominating the Chicago financial loop.

Rain had begun to fall over the city, slicking the empty streets in dark, reflective shades of gray.

Maya took the private executive elevator directly to the top floor—the inner sanctuary where her father, Marcus Reed, managed his global empire.

When the elevator doors slid open, she stepped into a vast, minimalist office with polished concrete floors and panoramic windows overlooking Lake Michigan.

Sitting behind a massive slate desk was Julian Vance.

Julian was forty-eight years old, immaculately dressed in a bespoke charcoal suit, sipping scotch from a crystal glass while reviewing market reports on three curved monitors.

He looked up as Maya walked in, her clothes still slightly damp beneath her coat.

"Maya," Julian said, his voice smooth and welcoming, showing not a single trace of surprise. "I heard there was a bit of a commotion at the Whitmore party tonight. Something about a spoiled heiress pushing an intern into a swimming pool?"

Maya walked slowly across the wide office, stopping ten feet from his desk.

"You knew, didn't you?" Maya asked softly.

Julian set his glass down on a stone coaster. "Knew what, my dear?"

"You knew I was undercover at Whitmore Global," Maya said. "You didn't orchestrate the fraud despite my presence; you used my presence to set up Arthur Whitmore as the sole fall guy."

Julian smiled—a cold, predatory smile that revealed his true nature.

"You're very bright, Maya," Julian said, leaning back in his leather chair. "Just like your father. But you're young. You think the business world operates on ethics and rules. In reality, it operates on leverage."

He pressed a key on his keyboard, illuminating the screen facing her.

"Arthur Whitmore was a greedy idiot who got over his head in debt," Julian continued smoothly. "I simply gave him the rope to hang himself. When Reed-Vance acquired Whitmore Global, the $1.5 billion surplus would have funded our new sovereign debt venture in East Asia—a venture that will generate tens of billions for this firm."

"And what about Arthur?" Maya asked. "What about the six thousand employees whose pensions you gambled?"

"Collateral damage," Julian shrugged dismissively. "In high finance, small people get crushed so big empires can expand. That's the way your father built this company, Maya. You think Marcus Reed is a saint?"

"My father builds companies, Julian," Maya snapped, her voice ringed with cold anger. "He doesn't steal from his own partners."

"Well, your father isn't here tonight, is he?" Julian replied, his eyes narrowing into sharp slits. "He's in London closing a telecommunications deal. And right now, I hold the voting proxy for the executive committee."
