Chapter 1 - The Splash Heard Round the Boardroom

The glass-walled penthouse garden atop the Vantage Tower offered an unobstructed view of the Chicago skyline, glittering under the late summer dusk. Chicago’s corporate elite had gathered for the annual pre-merger celebration of Whitmore Global Logistics and Reed-Vance Capital. Champagne flowed, waiters passed around silver trays of caviar, and light jazz played through hidden speakers.

Claire Whitmore, thirty-two, daughter of Whitmore Global’s Chief Executive Officer, stood near the edge of the rooftop infinity pool, holding a glass of vintage Dom Pérignon. Her tailored silk dress and emerald necklace screamed wealth, authority, and complete impunity.

Maya stood three feet away. To everyone in that room, Maya was simply an unpaid twenty-three-year-old summer intern from Northwestern University. She wore a modest dark navy blazer, flat black shoes, and carried a thick leather binder containing event itineraries, coffee orders, and executive briefing notes.

"Intern," Claire called out, her voice dripping with casual disdain. "My glass is half-empty. Go downstairs to the private cellar and get another bottle of the '08 vintage. And make it quick. You walk like you're carrying cement blocks."

"The private cellar is locked, Ms. Whitmore," Maya replied politely, her tone even and calm. "Only your father's executive assistant has the key, and he's currently in the briefing room."

Claire turned around slowly, her sharp eyes narrowing. She stepped closer to Maya, her expensive perfume overpowering the faint fragrance of poolside orchids.

"Did I ask for an excuse?" Claire asked, her voice carrying across the quieted circle of surrounding executives. "Or did I give you an instruction?"

"I'm simply stating the access protocol, Ms. Whitmore," Maya said quietly.

"Protocol?" Claire chuckled, looking toward two vice presidents standing nearby. "Listen to the summer help talking about protocol. You're here to carry folders and clear trash, sweetie. You don't speak unless spoken to."

Claire took a deliberate step forward, extended her foot, and clipped Maya’s ankle while giving her a hard, shove against her shoulder.

SPLASH.

The sound echoed off the reinforced glass walls of the penthouse terrace.

Maya plunged straight into the five-foot-deep heated infinity pool. Her leather binder flew from her hands, scattering pages of confidential merger summaries across the illuminated blue water.

Silence fell over the rooftop.

Claire walked to the edge of the pool, peered down at Maya, and laughed out loud—a shrill, cruel sound that cut through the soft jazz music.

"Oops," Claire smirked, turning to face Chicago's top corporate leadership. "Don't worry, everyone! That’s where interns belong anyway—at the bottom."

A few junior directors chuckled nervously, eager to stay on Claire’s good side. Most executives simply watched in uncomfortable silence.

Maya surfaced, brushing her wet dark hair away from her face. She didn't scream. She didn't cry. She didn't look flustered.

She calmly swam to the shallow steps, climbed out of the pool, and stood on the teak decking, water dripping from her clothes onto the spotless wooden planks. She reached into her blazer's waterproof inner pocket, pulled out a custom matte-black titanium smartphone, unlocked the screen, and placed a single call on speakerphone.

"Pause the merger," Maya said directly into the microphone.

Across the terrace, high-ranking executives began exchanging puzzled looks.

"Who is she calling?" a senior partner whispered. "Is she insane?"

Before anyone could answer, every single smartphone belonging to the C-suite executives of Whitmore Global and Reed-Vance Capital chimed simultaneously with emergency push notifications.

The CEO, Arthur Whitmore—Claire’s father—pulled his phone from his tuxedo pocket. He glanced at the encrypted terminal alert from the Board of Directors of Reed-Vance Capital, the $120-billion private equity powerhouse financing their $4.7 billion corporate buyout.

His face drained of all color.

The alert read: IMMEDIATE TRANSACTION SUSPENSION. ALL ESCROW FUNDS FROZEN BY ORDER OF MANAGING PARTNER M. REED.

Arthur’s hands began to tremble. He looked up from his screen, his wild eyes darting around the terrace until they landed on the soaked twenty-three-year-old girl standing by the pool.

"What... what is this?" Arthur stammered, stepping toward Maya, his voice barely audible. "Who... who gave that order?"

Claire scoffed, rolling her eyes as she walked toward her father. "Dad, ignore her! She's just a crazy little intern throwing a pathetic temper tantrum because she fell into the water. I'll have security throw her out of the building right now—"

"Shut up, Claire!" Arthur roared, turning on his daughter with a ferocity that stunned the entire rooftop party.

May you like

He turned back to Maya, his lips quivering as he stared at her face, finally recognizing the sharp, familiar jawline and icy gray eyes he had seen in private investor prospectuses for years.

"Your name..." Arthur breathed, horror dawning over him. "You're... Maya Reed."
