Chapter 4 - The Ghost in the System

By 2:00 AM, the boardroom meeting had turned into a frantic scramble for survival by Whitmore Global's board of directors.
The independent board members realized that if the federal authorities got wind of the fraud before a restructuring took place, every board member could face civil liability and criminal investigation for negligence.
"Ms. Reed," General Vance said, placing his hands flat on the mahogany table. "We recognize the gravity of the situation. Arthur Whitmore will be removed as Chief Executive Officer effective immediately. The board will strip him of his voting shares and place him on administrative leave."
"That's a start, General," Maya said, leaning back in her leather chair. "But it's insufficient."
"What do you want?" Arthur croaked, looking up through bloodshot eyes. "You've already killed the $4.7 billion merger. You've exposed my life's work. What more could you possibly want?"
"I want the ghost," Maya replied.
The room went completely quiet.
Arthur’s eyes widened in sheer terror—a reaction far more intense than when his fraud had been exposed.
"I... I don't know what you mean," Arthur stammered.
"Don't lie to me, Arthur," Maya said, tapping a key on her laptop. "A mid-sized logistics firm like yours doesn't set up complex off-shore shell networks and encrypted routing protocols alone. You had help. You had a handler inside the Chicago financial district—someone who taught you how to cook the books without triggering automated SEC red flags."
She projected a series of encrypted email headers onto the screen.
"For eleven weeks, I watched an external IP address access your private server every Tuesday at 3:00 AM," Maya explained. "The account operated under the handle 'Acheron.' Who is Acheron, Arthur?"
Arthur began shaking violently. "If I tell you... they won't just ruin me legally, Maya. They'll destroy my family. You don't understand who these people are!"
"And you don't understand who I am," Maya countered, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper. "If you cooperate with me right now and give me the identity of Acheron, Reed-Vance Capital will absorb your company's legitimate debt, saving Whitmore Global from bankruptcy and protecting your six thousand warehouse employees from losing their jobs."
She leaned forward, looking Arthur directly in the eyes.
"If you protect Acheron, I will pull our financial backing entirely, file a formal complaint with the Department of Justice by sunrise, and ensure that you, your CFO, and anyone who signed those fraudulent documents spends the next twenty years in a federal penitentiary."
Arthur looked at his daughter Claire, who was sobbing uncontrollably in the corner, then looked at the cold, unyielding face of the girl he had treated as a disposable intern just hours ago.
"His name... his name is Julian Vance," Arthur confessed in a broken whisper.
May you like
Maya’s eyes narrowed slightly.
Julian Vance was the Vice Chairman of Reed-Vance Capital—and her father’s primary business partner.
