Chapter 8 - THE FIRST IMPACT

Claire settled her body behind the M110.

Her feet spread wide on the concrete apron, anchoring her center of gravity. Her cheek pressed against the adjustable stock riser, her right eye aligning perfectly with the glass aperture of the high-magnification Leupold optic. Her left hand reached forward, gripping the rear bag under the buttstock to make microscopic elevation adjustments, while her right index finger rested gently alongside the trigger guard—never touching the steel trigger shoe until her crosshairs cleared the target.

Behind her, the officers held their breath. Not a single word was spoken.

Claire took a deep breath. In. Out. Half-breath held.

Her heart rate slowed to a crawl. In the optic, the heat shimmer seemed to part, revealing the faded white steel torso standing silent against the distant alkali flat.

Her right index finger slid onto the flat face of the match trigger, taking up the two-pound initial stage.

CRACK!

The sharp, high-pressure report of the M110 shattered the quiet of the desert valley. A localized ring of dust blasted outward from the muzzle brake, and the heavy rifle recoiled smoothly straight back into her shoulder pocket, the barrel returning to the exact same point of aim before the recoil cycle even finished.

Three-quarters of a second passed in complete silence.

CLANG!

A sharp, metallic ringing sound echoed back across the eight hundred meters of open desert, clear and distinct as a church bell. Through the spotting scope, Ellis saw a bright, fresh gray lead smudge appear dead-center on the target's chest.

"Impact," Ellis called out quietly. "Center mass."

Behind them, Lieutenant Brooks swallowed hard, his face turning an even deeper shade of ghost-white.
