Chapter 6 - THE SILENT SHIFT

Admiral Kane stared at the faded ink near her shoulder.
His smug, sarcastic expression crumbled into a mask of total, absolute shock. His heavy arms dropped from his chest, hanging uselessly at his sides as his mind frantically processed the reality standing before him.
He was looking at a ghost—a ghost from a classified program that had operated in the darkest corners of the global war on terror, an operative who had taken shots that official history books would never record, at distances that defied physics, under conditions that killed ordinary men.
Claire slowly raised her left hand. Without saying a single word, without offering an explanation, an apology, or a defensive comment, she smoothed the fabric of her sleeve back down her arm, covering the faded tattoo once more.
She locked eyes with Kane for one long, unbroken second.
The message in her gaze was absolute: Rank means nothing out here. The rifle is all that remains.
Kane swallowed hard, his throat dry, his hands trembling slightly against his thighs. The senior flag officer, who had spent his morning belittling a rankless woman, felt smaller than the dust beneath his boots.
Claire picked up her M110, rested the stock lightly against her right hip, and began walking calmly toward Firing Lane Four.
Nobody laughed now. The silence across the staging area was heavy, suffocating, and absolute.

Range Master Ellis watched her pass with a quiet, knowing expression, bowing his head in profound, unspoken respect as she stepped past his podium. Kane remained completely frozen on the gravel behind her, his entourage of officers standing like stone statues in the blazing desert sun.
Claire reached Firing Lane Four. She set her rifle case down, settled her body behind the heavy concrete bench, and looked downrange through the heat haze toward the tiny steel target standing eight hundred meters away... as Admiral Kane finally realized who had just stepped onto his range.
