Chapter 1 - THE BOLT CARRIER AND THE HEAT HAZE

The harsh, unrelenting sun of the American Southwest beat down on the long-range precision training facility, turning the vast expanse of pale dust and scrub brush into a shimmering sea of heat. In the far distance, the jagged, purple-and-ochre silhouettes of ancient rocky mountain ridges rose into a cloudless, pale-blue sky. The air was thick with the scent of hot metal, ozone, sun-baked earth, and gun oil. A relentless desert crosswind swept across the valley, blowing fine white dust in swirling, low-hanging spirals across the concrete firing lanes and whipping the bright red safety flags back and forth with loud, rhythmic cracks.
Beside the wooden equipment shed at the edge of the staging area, twenty-nine-year-old Claire Morgan sat cross-legged on a shaded patch of gravel.
Claire wore a plain, olive-drab tactical field uniform that featured deliberately no visible rank tabs, unit patches, or insignia. Her athletic, compact build was relaxed, her brown hair pulled back into a tight, practical military bun beneath her patrol cap. Her face was calm, unreadable, and completely devoid of emotion—framed by sharp cheekbones, a faint dust smudge across her jaw, and cool, steady hazel eyes that seemed to absorb every micro-detail of the environment without reacting to it.
Spread out on a heavy, lint-free cleaning cloth in front of her was a fully disassembled M110 Semi-Automatic Sniper System.
Her small, calloused hands moved over the high-precision components with an effortless, mechanical familiarity that looked like second nature. Her fingers wiped down the bolt carrier group with a oiled rag, checking the gas rings, inspecting the firing pin, and feeling for microscopic wear along the locking lugs. She didn't hurry, nor did she hesitate; every movement was fluid, economical, and precise.
A heavy, measured tread of leather dress boots echoed against the concrete walkway.
Admiral Victor Kane strolled over from the primary command trailer, flanked by a entourage of junior officers and staff aides. Kane was in his late fifties, broad-chested, wearing an immaculate, decorated desert service uniform covered in crisp ribbons, star insignia, and warfare pins. He carried himself with the heavy, unshakeable arrogance of a senior officer accustomed to immediate, total submission from everyone in his presence.
Kane stopped two paces from Claire, looking down at the plain, rankless woman sitting in the dirt with a condescending, amused smirk playing across his sharp jawline.
"What's your rank, sweetheart?" Kane asked, his booming baritone carrying easily across the staging area.
Claire didn't flinch. She didn't drop her cloth or look up. Her eyes remained locked on the matte-black bolt carrier in her hand as her thumb methodically swept a drop of lubricant across the cam pin channel.
Kane's smirk widened. He gestured with a leather-gloved hand toward the scattered steel components lying on the cloth before her.

"Or are you here to polish our rifles?" Kane added, chuckling softly.
The junior officers standing behind him erupted into a chorus of sycophantic, loud laughter that echoed off the metal roof of the equipment shed.
