Chapter 10 - THE UNTOUCHABLE GHOST

The range was utterly dead silent.

The junior officers stood frozen in place, staring from the distant target back to the plain, rankless woman standing beside Firing Lane Four. Their smug arrogance had been completely shattered, replaced by an overwhelming, humbling sense of profound reverence.

Admiral Kane stepped forward slowly, his boots crunching on the gravel. He had taken off his dark sunglasses, exposing his wide, bloodshot eyes. He looked at the M110 resting on the bench, then looked into Claire’s cool, unreadable hazel eyes.

"Private... or Captain... or whatever your designation is," Kane stammered, his booming voice reduced to a raspy, humbled whisper. "I... I owe you an apology. That was... extraordinary."

Claire looked at the Admiral. She didn't offer a dramatic speech, nor did she gloat over her performance. She didn't demand respect, nor did she pull her sleeve up to display her tattoo.

She simply reached down, closed her canvas rifle case, and zipped it shut with a smooth, quiet pull.

"The rifle is zeroed for your afternoon rotation, Admiral," Claire said softly, her voice calm and professional. "Have a good training session."

She picked up her gear, offered Range Master Ellis a subtle, respectful nod, and began walking away down the concrete path toward the outer perimeter gate, her athletic frame moving with quiet, unhurried grace.

Kane watched her go, standing silently in the desert heat as the wind blew white dust across his pristine, decorated uniform. He knew that for the rest of his career, whenever he looked out over an eight-hundred-meter range, he would remember the rankless woman in the dirt who had shown him what true perfection really looked like.

As Claire walked through the perimeter gate, disappearing into the vast, open desert landscape, the sun hit her shoulder one last time, illuminating the faded crosshair tattoo beneath her sleeve before she faded quietly into the horizon—a ghost, a legend, and an untouchable master of the long-range craft.
