Chapter 9 - THE UNOPENED LOCKER

The revelation hung in the cool desert air like a heavy fog.

Elena looked at the stranger, her heart pounding. "You're my uncle... aren't you?"

The gray-haired rider looked at her, his expression softening for a fraction of a second. He reached out with a leather-gloved hand and gently touched the lapel of her father's oversized vest—the same vest he had seen his twin brother wear decades ago.

"You have your mother's eyes, Elena," the rider said quietly. "Your father protected you well. He kept you away from this life."

"Why didn't you come back sooner?" Elena asked, tears welling at the corners of her eyes. "Why did you let him live in fear for fifteen years?"

"Because key three-one-seven wasn't ready to be opened," the rider replied, holding up his second key. "The box in the back of this station holds the evidence Daniel and I gathered the night we were set up. It holds the names, the ledger, and the missing cash. But it took fifteen years to track down the lock code that Marcus hid."

Cole Mercer’s jaw dropped. "The locker in the back storage room...?"

"Locker three-one-seven," the rider nodded. "Built into the foundation of this station in nineteen-ninety-four. Daniel kept his key. I kept mine. Neither of us could open it alone. That was the agreement."

Cole looked down at the tarnished key in his own hand, then looked back at the glass storefront. He realized now why Daniel had sent his daughter here—not to return a cut, but to deliver the missing piece of justice that would finally clear the Reyes family name.

"Marcus didn't run to hide," Cole realized suddenly, his eyes widening in panic. "He went to the back room to burn the locker!"
