Chapter 1 - THE OVERSIZED VEST

The night air hanging over the remote Arizona travel station was dry, cool, and thick with the sharp tang of high-octane gasoline, exhaust fumes, and damp asphalt. Overarching the gas pumps was a towering fluorescent canopy that cast a harsh, buzzing white glare down upon rows of customized American V-twin motorcycles. Their polished chrome pipes, high-rise handlebars, and painted gas tanks gleamed sharply under the artificial light, contrasting against the pitch-black void of the surrounding Sonoran Desert and the faint, jagged silhouette of distant mountain ridges under a moonless sky.

Walking across the wet asphalt toward the illuminated glass storefront of the travel station was nineteen-year-old Elena Reyes.

Elena was slender, fair-skinned, and visibly exhausted, with long, dark-brown hair tied back into a loose, practical ponytail that bounced softly against her neck with every step. She wore dusty blue jeans tucked into worn leather riding boots and carried a scuffed black canvas backpack slung tightly over her left shoulder. But what drew every eye under the station lights was the heavy, leather motorcycle vest hanging loosely off her frame.

It was an oversized, deeply aged vest—far too big for her narrow shoulders—belonging to her late father, Daniel Reyes. The leather was supple, cracked at the armholes, and stained with years of road grease, rain, and desert dust. Centered on the back was a large, faded motorcycle club patch featuring an embroidered skull with crossed pistons. Directly beneath it, tucked near the bottom seam in faint, darkened thread, was an unusual, smaller insignia: a stylized iron cross entwined with a striking serpent, a mark rarely seen on modern club cuts.

Gathered around three metal picnic tables near the storefront were six rugged club members, drinking black coffee from paper cups and talking loudly over the low rumble of an idling engine.

As Elena approached, her boots squeaking slightly on the wet pavement, one of the younger bikers—a broad-shouldered man with a shaved head and tattooed arms—looked up and squinted.

A wide, dismissive laugh broke from his lips.

"Cute costume, kid," the biker called out, leaning back against his machine.

Another club member standing beside him pointed a grease-stained finger toward the large faded emblem on the back of her vest.

"You know you didn't earn those colors," the second man sneered, his voice dropping into a stern, protective tone common among motorcycle crews. "You shouldn't be wearing a patched cut on this highway."

Elena didn't shrink back. Her nervous brown eyes flickered for a fraction of a second, but her jaw set into a hard, unyielding line. She took three more deliberate steps forward, stopping directly in front of the central table where the club president sat.

She looked straight into his eyes.

"Go ahead," Elena said, her voice clear and remarkably steady despite her racing heart. "Look."
