Chapter 10 - DUST AND THUNDER

Without waiting another second, Cole Mercer turned on his heel and sprinted across the wet pavement toward the glass storefront.

"Cole, wait!" Elena shouted, running after him, her heavy boots pounding against the asphalt.

The gray-haired rider kicked his motorcycle's kickstand down in a single fluid motion, dismounted from the machine with remarkable speed for a man his age, and followed them toward the building, holding his key tightly in his gloved fist.

They burst through the glass double doors of the travel station, the electronic chime ringing loudly overhead.

Inside, the station was lit by bright white overhead tubes, smelling of hot coffee, plastic wrappers, and cleaning fluid. The station manager behind the counter looked up in shock as the club president, a young girl in an oversized vest, and a gray-haired stranger charged past the aisles of snacks and motor oil toward the restricted back hallway.

At the far end of the narrow, concrete-walled corridor, a heavy steel door marked STAFF ONLY stood wide open.

Smoke was already drifting out into the hallway.

Cole kicked the steel door fully open with his heavy boot.

Inside the small, concrete storage room, Marcus was kneeling beside an old, wall-mounted steel locker stamped with the faded white numbers 317. He had a small blowtorch in his hand, trying desperately to melt the heavy dual-key cylinder lock before anyone could reach him.

"Get away from it, Marcus!" Cole roared, his voice filling the small room like thunder.

Marcus spun around, dropping the blowtorch onto the concrete floor where it sputtered out. His face was slick with sweat, his hands shaking violently as he backed against the storage shelves.

"Cole... listen to me!" Marcus begged, holding his hands up. "They forced me to do it fifteen years ago! If that locker opens, it ruins half the senior crew!"

"It ends today," the gray-haired rider said, stepping past Elena into the narrow room.

He walked straight up to the steel locker. He reached out his right hand and inserted his bright brass key into the right side of the dual-cylinder lock.

Cole walked up beside him, his massive tattooed frame blocking any chance of Marcus escaping. He inserted Daniel's tarnished key into the left side of the cylinder.

Elena stood in the doorway, holding her father's oversized vest tightly around her chest, watching as the two keys—separated for fifteen years by fear, distance, and blood—sat side by side in the heavy steel lock.

Cole looked at the gray-haired stranger.

"On three," Cole said softly.

The rider nodded once.

Together, their fingers turned the two keys in unison.

CLICK-THACK.

The heavy steel bolt inside locker 317 disengaged with a deep, echoing metallic snap, and the dark door swung slowly open, ready to reveal the truth that Daniel Reyes had spent his lifetime protecting.
