Chapter 7 - THE ARCHITECTURE OF A LIE

Adrian did not break eye contact with his security team as he slowly stood up from the pavement. His broad six-foot-two frame unfolded gracefully, the light catching the sharp cuts of his fitted black suit. To Mark and the rest of the detail, Adrian appeared as cold and formidable as ever, but inside, his blood ran like liquid ice.

"Mark," Adrian called out, his voice returning to its deep, authoritative command, though seasoned now with an underlying edge of lethal focus.

Mark immediately stepped away from the SUV door, taking three quick strides toward Adrian, his eyes darting down to the little girl on the cardboard box before rising to meet his boss's face.

"Boss?" Mark asked. "Is everything alright? Do you want us to clear the street?"

"No," Adrian said softly, his dark eyes fixing onto Mark’s face, searching for any flicker of guilt, deception, or nervousness. "Tell the rear vehicle to pull up to the alley behind the block. Keep the engine running."

Mark hesitated for a fraction of a second—an imperceptible delay that only someone who knew him as well as Adrian would ever notice.

"The alley, boss?" Mark questioned carefully. "It's tighter back there. Less visibility if someone tries a sweep."

"Did I ask for a security assessment, Mark?" Adrian asked, his voice dropping an octave into a low, terrifying register.

Mark instantly straightened his spine, bowing his head slightly. "No, boss. Right away." He reached for his earpiece, keying his radio to relay the instruction to the chase vehicle.

Adrian turned back down toward Sophia. He reached into his inner suit pocket, pulled out a thick leather card holder, and extracted a black, unbranded plastic keycard. He bent down once more, placing the card gently into her small paper cup beside the silver coins.

"Sophia," Adrian said quietly, ensuring his back blocked Mark's line of sight to her lips. "Who gave you the cardigan?"

Sophia blinked, her small hand reaching out to touch the heavy, oversized knitted wool wrapped around her shoulders. "A lady... at the shelter. But a man in a black car gave it to her first."
