Chapter 4 - A MOTHER’S GIFT

Slowly, hesitating with every fraction of an inch, Sophia unlocked her tiny fingers. She opened her palm, allowing the pale blue teardrop necklace to rest in the cup of her hand, exposed to the cold morning sunlight once again.
The stone was flawless, cut in a rare, custom teardrop shape that caught the blue spectrum of light in a distinct, glowing internal fire. It was not a piece of commercial jewelry; it was a one-of-a-kind heirloom, crafted decades ago for a single, specific person.
"My mama gave it to me," Sophia whispered softly, her thumb brushing gently over the smooth blue glass-like surface of the gem.
Adrian stopped breathing entirely. The world around him seemed to lose all sound. The rumbling SUV engines, the honking taxi horns, the rustling wind—everything faded into absolute silence. His dark eyes remained glued to the stone resting in the child’s dirty hand.
"Your mother..." Adrian choked out, his throat dry, his voice cracking slightly. "Your mother gave you this?"

Sophia offered a small, quiet nod, her light-brown hair blowing across her face in the chill breeze.
Ten feet behind Adrian, Mark stood by the side of the black armored SUV. He was watching Adrian’s back with intense, disciplined concentration. Mark had seen Adrian handle federal prosecutions, violent gang wars, and multi-million-dollar syndicate betrayals without ever losing his absolute composure. Seeing his boss down on one knee on a dirty sidewalk, visibly shaking while talking to a homeless child, made Mark’s hand drift closer to his concealed firearm. He signaled silently to the other security guards to remain alert, keeping his eyes moving across the street.
