Chapter 2 - THE ISOLATED APPROACH

In the driver’s seat and the front passenger seat, Mark—Adrian’s longtime head of security, a broad, heavily muscled man in his late forties wearing a dark suit—sensed the sudden, dramatic shift in the atmosphere inside the cab. Mark had served Adrian for fifteen years and could read his boss’s subtle physical cues with absolute precision. He saw Adrian’s jaw lock, saw his pupils dilate, and immediately reached for his door handle.

"Boss?" Mark asked, his voice low, cautious, and alert. "Is there a problem on the street?"

Before Mark could step out, Adrian reached forward, his hand moving with sudden, violent speed to grip the inner door handle of the SUV. He pushed the heavy armored door open, the hydraulic seals hissing against the cold morning air.

Mark opened his own door, stepping onto the pavement to fall into his standard protective escort formation.

"Stay," Adrian commanded. His voice was not its usual smooth, booming baritone; it was strained, raw, and completely devoid of its customary iron polish.

Mark froze in his tracks beside the rear wheel of the SUV, his hand hovering near his jacket lapel. He exchanged a quick, confused glance with the security men in the lead and chase SUVs, who had also begun unbuckling their belts.

Adrian stepped out onto the cold concrete. He ignored his security detail, ignored the staring pedestrians, and walked directly toward the flattened cardboard box where the little girl sat.

Sophia saw the massive man in the expensive black suit approaching. She caught sight of the three heavy black SUVs idling along the curb and the armed, sharp-eyed men standing watch around them. Instinctive terror flushed through her small frame. She reached out with a trembling, dirty hand, pulled her paper cup of coins close against her knees, and huddled back against the cold granite wall.

Adrian stopped three feet away. Recognizing how intimidating his tall, imposing presence was, he slowly sank down, lowering his broad frame onto one knee directly in front of her on the freezing sidewalk.

He kept his hands visible, resting them lightly on his knee. He looked into her frightened blue eyes.

"What's your name?" Adrian asked softly.

A long, agonizing pause stretched between them, filled only by the distant hum of city traffic and the idling engines of the armored convoy.

"Sophia," she whispered finally.
