Chapter 7 - THE BLACK NOTEBOOK

Jonah looked down at the small brass key resting in his palm. The intricate notches carved along its edge were unmistakable—it was a key designed for a high-security lockbox, the kind used in old bank vaults or heavy iron safes.
"The black notebook," Jonah said, looking back at Emma. "Is it still at the cabin?"
"No," Emma said, shaking her head. "Three days ago, two men in suits came to the cabin while Dad was... after Dad was gone. They tore the place apart looking for something. But Dad had already hidden a small metal box under the floorboards of the woodshed."
She pointed a small finger at the brass key in Jonah’s hand.
"He gave me that key two weeks before he died," Emma continued, tears glistening in her hazel eyes again. "He told me if men ever came looking for his things, I had to run to Cedar Falls, find the diner, and give the key to the man with the raven on his arm."
Russell took a step forward from the entrance, his boots heavy on the linoleum.
"Jonah," Russell growled softly, his voice thick with rising anger. "Twelve years ago, Marcus Vance told us Daniel stole fifty thousand dollars from the club's account and skipped town. Vance was the club's legal counsel back then! He showed us the signed transfer papers!"
"And we believed him," Jonah said, his voice filled with a devastating, quiet bitterness. "We believed Vance because Daniel vanished overnight, and Vance had the paper trail to back it up. We thought our own brother had sold us out."
Jonah picked up the faded photograph from the table, tracing his thumb over Daniel’s smiling face in the center of the seven-man group.
"Vance didn't just report Daniel missing," Jonah said, his dark eyes flashing with lethal clarity. "Vance framed him. He forced Daniel off the grid, stole his land, stole his reputation, and spent twelve years waiting for Daniel to die so he could take the last piece of property Daniel owned."
Micah tapped his fingers against the Formica table, his expression grim. "The question is... what's inside that metal box under the woodshed floorboards? What did Daniel have on Vance that kept Vance hunting him for twelve years?"

Jonah’s hand tightened around the small brass key.
"The truth," Jonah said simply.
