Chapter 6 - THE RED VINYL RETREAT

The metallic click of the front door deadbolt turning echoed through the Briar Creek Diner like a gunshot.

Outside, across the fog-draped pavement of Route 119, the idling dark sedan remained motionless behind the misty pines. Its dark windows reflected the dim morning light, hiding whoever sat behind the wheel.

Inside, the atmosphere had transformed completely. The cozy, Sunday morning warmth of the diner was replaced by an intense, tactical quiet.

Micah quickly walked over to the large front windows, pulling down the heavy aluminum blinds to block the view from the street, while Russell stood guard near the counter, his massive, gray-bearded frame tense and ready for action.

Jonah lowered himself back onto the red vinyl booth, pulling Emma down gently to sit beside him against the corner wall, safely away from any potential line of sight from the windows. He set his broad hands flat on the table, the small brass key resting between his palms alongside the wet photograph and the yellow foreclosure document.

"Emma," Jonah said softly, his voice softening into a rare, gentle tone as he looked into the frightened girl's eyes. "I need you to tell me everything about where you and your dad have been living."

Emma swallowed hard, her small hands clutching her faded denim jacket. She looked at the five large bikers surrounding the booth, seeing not danger, but the same fierce loyalty her father had spoken of in his bedtime stories.

"We lived in a small cabin near the old logging creek," Emma whispered, her voice steadying. "Past the ridge. Dad built it himself. He never let us go into town together... he said the town wasn't safe for us."

"Did he ever mention a name?" Micah asked, leaning over the table from the adjoining booth, his dark eyes intense. "Did he ever mention Marcus Vance?"

Emma’s eyes widened slightly at the name. She nodded slowly.

"Yes," Emma said. "He had a black notebook in his workshop. He wrote that name over and over again on the back pages. He said Marcus Vance was the man who took his life away."

Jonah’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. Marcus Vance was the prominent attorney whose signature sat at the bottom of the foreclosure document—the very same man who had reported Daniel missing twelve years ago.
