Chapter 4 - THE TWELVE-YEAR SIGNATURE

Russell leaned over Jonah’s broad shoulder, his dark eyes squinting at the legal document.
"What is it, Jonah?" Russell demanded, his gray-bearded jaw tense. "Who's taking Daniel's place?"
Jonah didn't look up from the yellow paper. His voice was deathly quiet, laced with a terrifying realization that sent a chill through the entire red vinyl booth.
"That man reported Daniel missing," Jonah said, his thumb hovering just above the blue ink signature.
The entire booth went completely silent. The hum of the diner kitchen in the background seemed to drop out entirely as Micah, Russell, and the three other bikers stared at the document in absolute disbelief.
Twelve years ago, when Daniel Mercer vanished without leaving a note, a vehicle, or a trace, it was an influential local attorney and property developer who had filed the official missing persons report with the township police, claiming Daniel had abandoned his debts and skipped town. That very same man’s signature now sat at the bottom of a forced foreclosure notice attempting to seize Daniel’s hidden family property the moment he was six feet under.
Before anyone could process the depth of the betrayal, Emma reached deep into the front pocket of her worn denim jacket.
She pulled out a tiny object wrapped in a piece of soft red velvet. She unrolled the fabric, picked up a small, antique brass key—no longer than a matchstick, with intricate, unique notches carved along its spine—and placed it gently into Jonah’s open palm.
"Dad said if anything ever happened to him..." Emma said softly, looking up into Jonah’s eyes, "...I was supposed to find the man with the raven on his arm and give him this. He said you'd know what this opens."

Jonah looked down at his palm.
The moment his eyes locked onto the unique silver-and-brass key, every trace of color drained completely from his face. His breathing stopped dead in his throat.
