Chapter 2 - THE SHADOW AT THE BACK

Titan’s dark, pointed ears snapped straight upright, twitching toward the rear double doors of the gymnasium. The massive dog shifted his weight silently, his amber eyes locking onto the far entryway with absolute, razor-sharp focus.

The loud, echoing laughter from the bleachers began to fade, dying down as students noticed the sudden change in the dog’s posture. A strange, expectant hush fell over the front rows of the wooden bleachers.

Mason turned his head, following his dog’s intense gaze toward the back wall.

Standing quietly near the heavy metal push-doors of the rear exit, partially shadowed by the shadow of the scoreboard, was a woman.

Rachel Reed, thirty-nine years old, stood with a posture that radiated quiet, undeniable authority. She was athletic, disciplined, and striking, her dark brown hair pulled back into a high, practical ponytail that highlighted her sharp cheekbones and intense, controlled green eyes. She wore camouflage tactical trousers tucked into dark tan combat boots, a fitted olive military field top that emphasized her broad shoulders, and a lightweight olive field jacket over top. Though she wore no rank insignia, unit patches, or public medals on her jacket, her effortless balance, relaxed hands, and hawk-like scanning of the room instantly revealed elite-level military training to anyone who knew what to look for.

Lieutenant Carter turned away from Mason, his eyes tracking the sudden shift in the crowd’s attention until he spotted the lone woman standing near the back wall. He chuckled softly into the microphone, taking two steps toward her across the hardwood court.

"You’re his mother?" Carter asked, his voice carrying through the quiet gym with a smooth, patronizing edge.

Rachel didn't flinch. She didn't raise her voice or change her expression. She took three slow, deliberate steps out of the shadows and into the warm sunlight streaming through the high windows.

"I am," Rachel said clearly. Her voice wasn't loud, yet it possessed a natural, carrying tone that cut straight through the vast space.

Lieutenant Carter folded his arms over his chest, his smile growing even more condescending as he motioned toward Mason.

"And you claim those records are real?" Carter challenged, raising an eyebrow in front of the silent bleachers. "That what your son just told this entire gymnasium is factual?"

May you like

Rachel held his stare across forty feet of polished floor, her intense eyes never wavering for a fraction of a second.

"That’s what my records say," Rachel replied softly.
