Chapter 10 - THE LEGEND REVEALED

The gymnasium was so quiet you could hear the soft whirring of the industrial floor fans overhead. Hundreds of students leaned forward in the bleachers, watching the once-confident Navy officer sweat under the bright gym lights.
"I made a deeply uninformed and inaccurate statement regarding the records presented by Mason Reed," Lieutenant Carter announced into the microphone, his head bowed slightly in shame. "The individual standing before you... Rachel Reed... is a decorated veteran of the highest order whose service to our country and Naval Special Warfare is absolute, undeniable, and extraordinary. I apologize unreservedly to Mason, to his mother, and to all of you for my disrespect."
A sudden wave of gasps and murmurs swept through the bleachers. The students who had been laughing just ten minutes ago were now staring at Rachel Reed with wide-eyed shock and immense respect.
Rachel didn't smile. She didn't gloat. She simply gave Carter a single, sharp nod of her head.
"Dismissed, Lieutenant," she said softly.
Carter clicked off the microphone, snapped a quick, respectful salute toward Rachel, and turned on his heel, walking rapidly toward the rear exit of the gym, his face burning with shame.
Chief Ramirez turned toward the three rows of fifty military working dogs. He raised his hand and gave a sharp, two-finger tactical signal.
Instantly, the handlers stood at attention, and the fifty war dogs rose to their feet in perfect unison, stepping back into their three neat columns with disciplined, silent grace.
Mason looked down at Titan, then up at his mother. A slow, proud smile spread across the teenager's face, replacing every trace of the embarrassment he had felt earlier. He stepped close to Rachel, wrapping his arm around her shoulders.
"You're amazing, Mom," Mason said softly.
Rachel smiled, reaching up to wrap her arm around her son's waist, pulling him close as Titan let out a happy, low bark beside them.

"Come on, Mason," Rachel said gently, turning toward the double exit doors as the crowd in the bleachers erupted into a massive, thunderous ovation. "Let's go home. I'll make dinner."
As they walked side by side down the center of the hardwood court, framed by the massive American flag and surrounded by fifty elite military war dogs clearing a path for them, Mason knew that his life would never be the same again—and that the legend of Rachel Reed would echo through the halls of his school for generations to come.
