Chapter 9 - The Restoration of Order

As Rourke was led away, a heavy, profound quiet lingered over the Pentagon cafeteria. Every officer in the room sat upright, their eyes fixed on Eleanor with an overwhelming sense of newfound respect and quiet awe. The Army captain who had laughed earlier stood up from his table, bowed his head respectfully to Eleanor, and quietly cleared his tray in total shame.

The General turned back to Eleanor, his stern expression softening slightly into one of deep professional respect.

"Dr. Mercer, I will have my aide fetch a clean garment from the executive suite immediately, and a fresh lunch prepared for you in the private dining quarters," the General offered warmly.

"Thank you, General, but that won't be necessary," Eleanor declined gracefully, holding up her hands. "I have a briefing with the Undersecretary in twenty minutes. A coffee stain will not prevent me from conducting official business."

She reached down, picked up a clean paper napkin from a nearby dispenser, and casually dabbed at the wet wool of her gray blazer. Her calm, unbothered demeanor returned instantly, as if the dramatic confrontation had been nothing more than a mild, minor inconvenience during her busy workday.

The General smiled faintly, nodding his head in appreciation of her unshakeable dedication to her duties. "As you wish, Doctor. But rest assured, today's incident will be fully documented in the Sergeant's permanent service record."

"I expect nothing less, General," Eleanor replied with a subtle, sharp smile.
