Chapter 3 - The Illusory Threshold

Rourke took a aggressive step closer, using his imposing height and muscular build to loom over Eleanor. His jaw tightened as he glared down at her, irritated that a civilian woman showed no fear or deference after being reprimanded in public.

“Pick up your tray and find somewhere else to eat,” Rourke growled, leaning down slightly so his face was inches from hers. “Before I have security escort you out of the building entirely.”

Eleanor did not flinch. She did not take a single step backward, nor did she break eye contact. The scalding coffee stain on her chest was cooling against her skin, but her focus remained absolute, laser-locked onto the Marine standing before her.

“Do you actually have the authority to remove me, Sergeant?” Eleanor asked calmly, her tone devoid of anger, sounding more like an inspector questioning a subordinate's basic technical qualifications.

The calm, clinical nature of her question struck Rourke like an unexpected splash of cold water. He expected tears, an angry outburst, or a hasty retreat. He did not expect a calm, authoritative challenge to his actual jurisdictional power inside the building.

Around them, the laughter from the nearby Army captain died down instantly. Rourke’s confident smile began to fade, replaced by a subtle flicker of uncertainty in his dark eyes. He looked at her gray blazer, her unhurried posture, and the complete absence of panic in her expression. For the first time since he had shoved her, a faint, instinctual alarm bell rang in the back of his mind, though his pride refused to let him back down.
