Chapter 7 - The Absolute Reckoning

The Four-Star Officer stopped directly beside Dr. Eleanor Mercer. He did not look at Rourke immediately; instead, his sharp, weathered eyes scanned the coffee stain spreading across Eleanor’s gray blazer and white silk blouse. An expression of profound, dark disappointment crossed his face.

"Dr. Mercer," the General spoke, his voice low and formal, carrying a deep, resonant authority that echoed off the high ceilings. "I apologize deeply for this unacceptable display of conduct inside this facility. Are you injured?"

"I am fine, General," Eleanor replied calmly, her voice entirely steady. "Though my blazer will require immediate dry cleaning, and my lunch has been thoroughly ruined."

"That will be taken care of immediately," the General stated firmly.

He then turned his body ninety degrees, facing Gunnery Sergeant Rourke directly. The air around Rourke seemed to drop ten degrees in temperature. The four-star commander looked down at the Marine with an expression of cold, unyielding fury that had broken seasoned commanders in tactical briefing rooms.

"Gunnery Sergeant Rourke," the General said softly, every word weighted like lead. "Do you have any idea who this civilian is?"

Rourke stood at rigid attention, his eyes fixed straight ahead, his chest heaving as panic surged through his veins. "N-no, Sir! I... I assumed she was unauthorized personnel in a restricted command area, Sir!"

"You assumed," the General repeated, his tone dripping with quiet disdain. "You placed your hands on the Director of Special Defense Oversight for the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Dr. Mercer holds executive authority over defense budget allocations, operational readiness audits, and senior personnel evaluations across all four service branches."

Rourke’s knees nearly buckled. The Army captain who had laughed earlier buried his face in his hands, terrified that he would be swept up in the fallout.
