Chapter 8 - THE HEIR'S DECISION

Mateo turned back to Tessa. He reached out with his broad, warm hand, gently lifting the broken gold ring resting against her collarbone. He held the gold piece in his palm, feeling its weight, looking down into her wide, terrified green eyes.
"You came here to pay your nursing tuition," Mateo murmured softly, a faint, dark smile touching the corner of his lips.
"Yes," Tessa whispered, her voice shaking. "I just wanted to finish my degree... I don't want your empire, Mr. Vitiello. I don't want any of this. Please just let me go back to the kitchen."
Mateo looked at her auburn hair, her sharp cheekbones, her fierce, quiet dignity. He realized that for the past three months, he hadn't just been watching a pretty housemaid serve water—he had been drawn to the exact same royal, unyielding spirit that had captured his father's heart sixty years ago in Palermo.
"You aren't going back to the kitchen, Tessa," Mateo said smoothly.
Tessa’s heart dropped into her stomach. "What?"
Salvatore raised his head from his hands, looking up at his son with weary, bloodshot eyes. "Mateo... what are you doing?"
Mateo reached into his inner suit jacket pocket, pulled out his own heavy gold signet ring—the matching half of the Giuliano seal that his father had passed down to him on his thirtieth birthday—and laid it flat on the white linen tablecloth beside Tessa’s water pitcher.
He took Tessa’s hand, placing her half of the ring directly beside his.

The two pieces of broken gold slid together on the white fabric, fitting with mathematical, seamless perfection to reform the complete, unbroken crest of the lion and the sword.
"The blood feud ends tonight," Mateo declared, his voice carrying an iron authority that echoed through the private dining room. "The Giuliano family isn't returning to collect a debt. It's returning to merge with the throne."
