Chapter 7 - THE GOLDEN HALF

Tessa felt her knees go weak. Her hand left the handle of the silver water pitcher, dropping down to touch the small, heavy silver locket she wore beneath the high lace collar of her black-and-white maid uniform.

She had worn that locket every single day since her great-grandmother’s funeral. Inside it was not a photograph.

Mateo noticed her hand moving toward her throat.

"Tessa," Mateo commanded gently, taking half a step forward. "What's under your collar?"

Tessa swallowed hard, her fingers trembling violently as she unbuttoned the top two pearl buttons of her uniform neck. She pulled out a delicate silver chain. Suspended from the chain was a worn, tarnished piece of heavy yellow gold—a jagged, broken half of a signet ring bearing the deeply carved crest of a cresting lion over a sword.

Don Salvatore let out a sharp, gasping sob, dropping his silver cane once again as he fell back into his heavy leather dining chair, his face buried in his calloused hands.

The entire dining room erupted into a wave of hushed, panicked murmurs. The underboss stepped forward, his hand reaching inside his suit jacket.

"Don Salvatore!" the underboss warned sharply. "This is madness! She’s an unauthorized survivor of a hostile family! If New York finds out about this ring—"

"Silence!" Mateo’s voice boomed across the room like a thunderclap.

Mateo didn't draw a weapon. He simply turned his head toward his lieutenants, his steel-gray eyes flashing with a cold, monstrous fury that instantly cut off every murmur in the room.

"If anyone in this room utters a single word about what was spoken at this table tonight," Mateo said, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp, lethal whisper, "I will personally feed them to the river before sunrise. Am I understood?"

The sixteen men and women in the room bowed their heads instantly, completely paralyzed by the heir's absolute authority.

"Understood, Mateo," the underboss stammered, stepping back into the shadows.
