Chapter 2 - THE VIPER'S STRIKE

CLACK!
The sharp, metallic crack of Don Salvatore’s silver-headed cane slamming against the white marble border of the floor echoed like a gunshot through the silent room.
The old man’s back went rigid as an iron bar. The casual, dismissive posture vanished, replaced by an explosive, terrifying vitality. His thick white eyebrows pulled together, shadowing eyes that suddenly burned with a lethal, desperate intensity.
"Who taught you those words?!" Salvatore demanded.
His voice was no longer a frail patriarch’s rasp; it was the booming, gravelly baritone of a warlord commanding his soldiers. He leaned forward over his plate, his white knuckles turning blue as he gripped the silver head of his viper cane.
Tessa felt every drop of blood drain from her face. The fifteen heavy pairs of eyes surrounding the table burned into her skin like white-hot iron. Her fingers tightened violently around the handle of the silver pitcher, pressing the cold metal against her white apron.
"Answer him, Tessa," a low, smooth voice commanded.
Mateo stood up slowly from his chair. His tall, broad-shouldered frame towered over the table, casting a long shadow across the pristine white linen tablecloth. He didn't look angry; his gray eyes were calculating, analytical, and intensely protective as he studied the red-haired girl standing before his father.
Around the room, even the seasoned enforcers held their breath. In the Vitiello family, no servant spoke unbidden, and no stranger spoke the dialect of the inner circle without triggering immediate suspicion of espionage or infiltration.
Tessa swallowed hard, her pulse hammering in her throat like a trapped bird. She kept her chin up, meeting the old man’s terrifying gaze with the quiet, unyielding dignity her great-grandmother had instilled in her.
"My great-grandmother," Tessa answered softly, her English clear and steady despite her fear. "She taught me."
Salvatore’s expression shifted instantly. The furious, defensive anger melted away, replaced by a sudden, haunting pale stillness that was infinitely more unsettling. He pushed his heavy chair back three inches, his boots scraping against the floorboards, and stood up with surprising speed.
He took one slow, heavy step around the corner of the table, leaning slightly on his silver cane, his eyes never leaving Tessa’s face. He examined her auburn hair, her sharp cheekbones, the slight cleft in her chin, and the striking green of her eyes.

Mateo noticed his father’s transformation instantly. For the first time all evening, the confident, calculating heir looked genuinely uncertain, his gray eyes flicking between his father’s pale face and the trembling housemaid.
"What was her name?" Salvatore asked, his voice dropping into a low, hoarse whisper that barely carried across the linen.
