Chapter 6 - THE BLOODLINE CONUNDRUM

A heavy, suffocating silence descended over Bellori's private dining room once more.

The lieutenants standing near the velvet drapes exchanged bewildered, terrified glances. The entire legal foundation of the Vitiello family’s rise to power in Chicago had been built on the absolute destruction of the Giuliano clan. If the surviving bosses in New York or Sicily ever learned that the patriarch had spared a Giuliano heir—and that her descendant was currently serving water in a Chicago restaurant—the blood feud would reignite instantly.

Mateo turned around slowly to face Tessa.

His gray eyes scanned her face with a new, profound intensity. He didn't see a quiet, struggling nursing student in a maid's uniform anymore. He saw the last surviving bloodline of the oldest, most legendary family in Sicilian history—a woman whose very existence was a living, breathing act of treason against his father's empire.

"Tessa," Mateo said softly, stepping closer to her until he could smell the faint scent of lavender and soap on her collar. "Did she ever tell you why she sent you to work shifts at Bellori?"

Tessa shook her head frantically, her auburn hair swaying. "She didn't send me here! She passed away two years ago! I applied for this catering job through an agency on Michigan Avenue three months ago! I didn't even know who the Vitiello family was until tonight!"

Salvatore let out a rough, ragged laugh that sounded like dry leaves scraping across concrete.

"It wasn't a coincidence," Salvatore whispered, picking up his fallen silver cane from the floor with a shaking hand and leaning heavily against it. "Fate has a dark, twisted sense of humor, my son. The Giuliano bloodline didn't return to seek revenge. It returned to collect its debt."

Mateo turned back to his father. "What debt?"

Salvatore looked into his son’s eyes, his expression turning grave and terrifyingly serious.

"Before Rosa boarded that Greek ship in 1966," Salvatore revealed, "she took half of the Giuliano family seal—a gold signet ring split down the center. She kept one half. I kept the other. I swore on my mother's grave that if her blood ever returned to me holding her half... the Vitiello family would give them whatever they asked for. Even the empire itself."
