Chapter 8 - THE MASK OF SEVENTEEN YEARS

Adrian stood in the doorway of the pantry, his tall, muscular frame cast in silhouette against the bright LED lighting behind him. He did not step out into the kitchen. He did not smile. He simply stared at his closest friend across the dark, silent space.

To an outsider, the scene looked like two wealthy executives sharing a late-night moment in a luxury mansion. But beneath the surface, the air was thick with a suffocating, lethal tension.

"Nathan," Adrian said softly, his gravelly voice flat and unreadable. "What are you doing here?"

Nathan took a slow sip of his sparkling water, his smile remaining perfectly in place as he walked casually toward the kitchen island, setting his glass down on the white Calacatta marble top.

"I brought over the revised acquisition files for the Milwaukee port expansion," Nathan said smoothly, gesturing toward the leather portfolio in his hand. "We have the board call at eight tomorrow morning. I knew you’d be awake—you haven't slept a full night since Sarah passed. I figured we could review the numbers over coffee before the sun comes up."

It was a brilliant, flawless cover story. Delivered with the easy, casual familiarity of a man who had worked alongside Adrian for half his life, it offered a completely logical explanation for his presence at the estate in the dead of night.

Except Adrian now knew the truth.

Nathan hadn't come to review acquisition files. Nathan had come because his automated server alert had tripped the moment Adrian opened the Vanguard Domestic Management audit log. Nathan had come to see how much Adrian knew.

"The Milwaukee files," Adrian repeated slowly, taking two deliberate steps out of the pantry and into the dark kitchen, leaving the pantry door resting three inches open behind him.

"Yeah," Nathan nodded, leaning his hip casually against the marble island, his posture relaxed, his hands open and unthreatening. "The legal team finalized the escrow terms at midnight. Everything's ready for your signature."

Adrian walked slowly to the central island, stopping six feet away from Nathan. The warm amber night-light caught the dark stubble on Adrian’s jaw and the icy, dead calm in his eyes.

"You're working late, Nathan," Adrian said softly.

"You know me, Adrian," Nathan chuckled, shaking his head with affectionate warmth. "Someone has to keep the empire running while you're... dealing with things."

Dealing with things.

The phrase hung in the cold air between them like a poison cloud. For two years, Nathan had used Adrian's grief—his depression, his insomnia, his withdrawal from daily management—as a shield to cover his own systemic plunder of Adrian's life, his business, and his home.

Adrian looked at Nathan’s hands. Immaculate, manicured fingers that had never cleaned a floor, never touched industrial bleach, and never known a day of physical labor.

Then Adrian thought of June’s hands. Raw, red, cracked, and bleeding in the dark.

A dark, terrifying smile touched the corner of Adrian’s mouth—a cold, humorless line that made Nathan’s smile flicker for a fraction of a millisecond.

"You take good care of me, Nathan," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a register so quiet, so dangerous, that the air in the kitchen seemed to freeze. "You take care of the ports. You take care of the board. You even take care of the domestic staff."
