Chapter 6 - THE SILENT SIGNAL

Adrian’s fingers moved automatically across the phone screen. His corporate instinct—the cold, calculating mind that had built an empire—took over. He opened the secondary corporate ledgers, preparing to initiate an immediate, emergency freeze on all Vanguard Domestic Management offshore accounts and freeze Nathan's administrative privileges across the entire Mercer Global network.

He tapped the security override command: SYSTEM_LOCKDOWN_LEVEL_09.

Before his thumb could press the final confirmation prompt, the screen of his smartphone suddenly went dark.

The lockdown interface vanished.

A black screen appeared, followed by a single, high-priority encrypted text notification sliding down from the top of the display.

The message was from Nathan Cross.

The audience, looking over Adrian's shoulder, could see the notification banner, but the body of the message was obscured by high-density corporate encryption formatting—a block of scramble-code that resolved into a short, three-line text that was never clearly readable to the viewer.

Adrian read the words.

His entire body went completely, unnaturally rigid.

His pupils dilated. His chest stopped moving. The color that had returned to his face drained away once more, leaving him looking like a ghost standing in the bright LED glow of the pantry.

June watched him from the floor, her breath catching in her throat. She saw the way his fingers tightened around the phone until his knuckles turned as white as the marble shelves behind him.

"Sir?" June whispered, her voice trembling in the silence. "Mr. Mercer... what does it say?"

Adrian did not reply.

The text message from Nathan was not a confession. It was not an apology.

It was a real-time system ping.

A notification that an administrative user had just accessed the Lake Forest estate’s local network logs—a notification showing that Nathan had just logged into the mansion’s internal security feed from a secondary device located less than fifty feet away.

Nathan knew.

Nathan had set up an automated security trigger inside the payroll server: the moment anyone accessed the Vanguard Domestic Management audit trail from inside the mansion after midnight, a silent alert was dispatched directly to Nathan’s personal phone.

And Nathan was already inside the house.

Adrian slowly lifted his head from the phone screen. His icy blue eyes turned away from the pantry, looking past the frame of the wooden door, out into the vast, dark, silent expanse of the grand kitchen.

In the far distance, down the long mahogany hallway that connected the kitchen wing to the main entrance foyer, the soft, distinct sound of a heavy oak door closing echoed softly through the estate.

Click.

Then came the footsteps.

Slow, deliberate, leather-soled shoes clicking softly against the polished marble floor of the grand gallery, moving steadily toward the kitchen.

May you like

Adrian’s voice dropped into a whisper so low, so dark, that it chilled the air in the pantry.

"He knows."
