Chapter 4 - THE AUDIT OF SHADOWS

The walk-in pantry was dead silent save for the rapid tap-tap-tap of Adrian’s thumb against his smartphone screen.

Adrian backed out of June's current payroll file and opened the historical archives. He pulled up the monthly ledger for January of the previous year.

Disbursement: $6,720. Employee Received: $1,840.

He pulled up May.

Disbursement: $7,100. Employee Received: $1,910.

He pulled up November.

Disbursement: $6,900. Employee Received: $1,880.

The siphon was clean, methodical, and ruthlessly consistent. The master corporate account disbursed the full, luxury-tier salary allocated by Adrian's office into a shell intermediary LLC called Vanguard Domestic Management. From there, the funds were split: a tiny fraction was routed to June’s local bank account in Rockford, while the remaining seventy-two percent was funneled through a series of secondary offshore accounts registered in the Cayman Islands.

Adrian’s face was like carved granite under the harsh pantry LEDs.

This wasn't an administrative error. It wasn't a clerical mix-up by an outside payroll agency. This was an engineered, predatory embezzlement scheme operating inside his own home, targeting the most vulnerable people in his employ—the housekeepers, the groundskeepers, the kitchen assistants, and the night guards who had no corporate leverage, no legal counsel, and no idea what they were actually supposed to be paid.

He checked the groundskeeping department.

Tomas Morales - Head Landscaper. Allocated pay: $55/hour. Actual received pay: $18/hour.

He checked the night security detail.

David Vance - Gate Security. Allocated pay: $48/hour. Actual received pay: $22/hour.

Over the course of twenty-four months, across thirty domestic employees, the thief had skimmed over $2.4 million from Adrian’s personal estate management fund alone.

Adrian's chest rose and fell in slow, deliberate cycles. A cold, lethal fury settled into his bones—not just because his money was being stolen, but because it was being stolen off the backs of exhausted mothers who were forced to hide in his pantry at three in the morning to eat leftovers off a cold floor.

June watched his face from the marble tile, her voice trembling as she spoke into the heavy quiet.

"Mr. Mercer... is... is someone stealing?"

Adrian slowly looked down at her. His icy blue eyes softened slightly, but the darkness behind them was absolute.

"Someone is taking your money, June," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying calm. "They’ve been taking three-quarters of your paycheck every two weeks since the day you started working in this house."

June’s hands shook so violently that the silver fork clattered against the ceramic rim of her plate. Tears welled up in her dark brown eyes, spilling over her pale, exhausted cheeks.

"Three... three-quarters?" she sobbed silently, her chest heaving under her maid apron. "My mother... my mother's medicine costs six hundred dollars a month... I couldn't buy Toby new shoes for school last week... I thought... I thought I just wasn't working hard enough..."

Adrian reached out. His large, warm hand wrapped gently around her cracked, cold knuckles, steadying her trembling grip on the plate.

"Listen to me, June," Adrian said, his voice cutting through her tears with absolute, unyielding authority. "You are going to get every single dollar that was stolen from you. I will personally ensure that every cent is back-paid into your account with interest. You will never have to worry about your mother’s medicine or your boys' shoes again."

June looked at him through her tears, overwhelmed by the sudden, massive shift in her reality. "Mr. Mercer... who would do this?"

Adrian lifted his phone back into his line of sight.

"To pull off a siphon like this through my private family office," Adrian said, his eyes narrowing as he accessed the top-tier security logs, "you need master administrative clearance. You need my private authorization key."
