Chapter 10 - THE PROMISE OF WAR

For five long seconds, the only sound in the vast, luxury kitchen was the hum of the sub-zero refrigerators and the faint, rhythmic ticking of the antique tall clock in the main gallery.

Nathan slowly lifted his eyes from the phone screen to look at Adrian.

The polite, loyal lieutenant of seventeen years was gone. Standing in his place was a man who had stolen millions, who had compromised an empire, and who was now backed into a corner in the middle of the night inside a dark mansion.

"You shouldn't have dug into those files, Adrian," Nathan said. His voice was no longer warm or polite; it was flat, cold, and entirely devoid of remorse. "You were doing so well staying out of the operational details. You should have stayed in your library with your whiskey."

Adrian didn't flinch. He didn't raise his voice. He took a single step around the island, closing the distance between them until he was standing less than three feet from the man who had betrayed him.

"You took money from women who clean my floors for fourteen dollars an hour," Adrian said, his voice a low, terrifying rumble of pure, unadulterated fury. "You let a mother with a sick parent and two children starve in my house so you could skim offshore funds."

Nathan let out a short, bitter sneer, shaking his head.

"Don't give me your moral speeches, Adrian!" Nathan snapped softly, his eyes flashing with long-suppressed resentment. "I built half of Mercer Global! While you were locked in this mansion weeping over your dead wife for two years, I was the one keeping the banks happy! I was the one managing the unions! I deserved every dollar I took from those accounts! It was compensation for holding your broken life together!"

"You didn't take it from me, Nathan," Adrian said, his icy blue eyes locking onto Nathan's with absolute, lethal conviction. "You took it from them. And that makes you a parasite."

Nathan stepped back half a pace, reaching into his navy suit jacket and pulling out a small, encrypted flash drive, tossing it onto the marble island beside the phone.

"Go ahead and call the board, Adrian," Nathan whispered, a dangerous, arrogant smile returning to his pale face. "Go ahead and call the police. That drive contains the secondary routing logs for your offshore trusts. If I go down for payroll fraud, your entire corporate structure gets dragged into a federal tax audit that will freeze Mercer Global's assets for five years. You'll lose the Milwaukee port. You'll lose the European logistics lease. You'll lose everything."

Nathan picked up his leather portfolio, straightened his dark silk tie, and looked at Adrian one last time.

"We can settle this quietly in the morning," Nathan said coldly. "Or you can burn your own empire down to avenge a housekeeper. The choice is yours, CEO."

Nathan turned on his heel and walked slowly out of the kitchen, his leather shoes clicking sharply against the dark walnut floorboards as he disappeared down the long hallway toward the front entrance.

Click-clack.

The front oak doors opened, closed, and the distant roar of a luxury sports car engine faded into the quiet Lake Forest night.

The kitchen was silent once more.

Adrian stood motionless beside the marble island, looking down at the encrypted flash drive and his phone.

The walk-in pantry door creaked open three inches.

June Carter stepped out slowly into the dim amber light. She was still clutching her ceramic plate, her face pale, her tear-stained eyes wide with fear and awe as she looked at her employer.

"Mr. Mercer...?" June whispered timidly. "What... what happens now?"

Adrian slowly turned his head to look at her.

The grief, the tiredness, and the insomnia that had weighed him down for two years were completely gone. In their place burned a terrifying, unstoppable fire—a sense of purpose forged in the dark of his own home.

He walked over to June, gently took the ceramic plate from her cracked hands, and set it down on the counter.

"Now, June," Adrian said, his deep voice carrying an absolute, unshakeable promise, "we burn his world to the ground."
