Chapter 9 - VANESSA WITHOUT THE WEDDING

By midnight, the wedding venue was empty.

The flowers remained.

Most food went to a shelter network the caterer already used.

The band packed up.

The marriage license remained unsigned.

Daniel and Vanessa had not married.

Not that day.

Vanessa sat alone in the bridal suite after everyone else left.

Julia came back.

That surprised her.

No children.

No Caleb.

Just Julia.

Vanessa looked up.

“What do you want?”

“My daughter's blue sweater.”

Vanessa nodded toward the chair.

Julia picked it up.

Then stopped.

“You hit him.”

Vanessa looked down.

“Yes.”

“You thought two children were his.”

“Yes.”

“So your first response was to assault him.”

“Yes.”

Julia stared.

Vanessa added:

“I know.”

Not enough.

Still true.

Julia sat.

“Why did you really hide us?”

Vanessa looked tired.

“I told everybody.”

“No.”

Julia shook her head.

“You told them about financing.”

Vanessa stared.

“You sent me six thousand dollars two years after the agreement ended. You kept Mia's school picture in your desk. Caleb found it when you gave his lawyer document discovery last month.”

Vanessa went still.

Julia continued.

“You weren't trying to forget us.”

No.

That was the thing Vanessa had not said.

She had watched from a distance.

Mia's school website.

Julia's public social media.

One photograph at Christmas.

One gymnastics recital.

Never contacted.

Why?

Because every month that passed made the first conversation harder.

If she told Daniel after one month, she had delayed.

After a year, she had lied.

After four years—

she had built part of their life on it.

Vanessa said:

“I kept thinking I needed a version that didn't make me the person who did this.”

Julia nodded.

“And?”

“There isn't one.”

Good.

Then Julia admitted her own choice.

She had not told Mia Aaron was her biological father until six months ago.

Why?

Mia loved Ben, Julia's husband.

Called him Dad.

Julia worried telling her about Aaron would make her feel disloyal.

So she used:

A friend of Mom's.

Someone from before.

Then Caleb found Aaron's photographs in storage and pushed.

Julia finally told Mia.

Mia asked:

“Does his brother know me?”

Julia lied.

She said:

“I don't know.”

She did know what Vanessa had told her.

That Daniel supposedly wanted no contact.

She spared Mia that.

Or controlled it.

Depends on the day.

Vanessa looked at her.

“We're both good at deciding what children shouldn't hear.”

Julia's face hardened.

“Don't make us equal.”

“No.”

Vanessa nodded.

“We're not.”

Good.

Specific responsibility.

Then Julia said:

“I did not authorize Caleb to bring Mia into the ceremony.”

“I know.”

“I authorized him to photograph the wedding.”

Vanessa looked surprised.

Julia had agreed because Caleb said he wanted current images of Daniel and Vanessa to show Mia afterward.

That was already questionable.

But she had not agreed to confrontation.

Caleb had made that decision alone after Vanessa's lawyer denied any relationship.

“Are you going to let him keep those photographs?”

Vanessa asked.

Julia shook her head.

“Not of Mia in the aisle.”

Caleb had already agreed to seal them with the lawyers.

No publication.

No social media.

No sale.

The guest videos were another matter.

Several were already online.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Her slap had traveled farther than the secret she had tried to contain.

Then Julia took Mia's sweater.

Before leaving, she said:

“Mia wants to know Daniel.”

Vanessa looked up.

“She doesn't know him.”

“No.”

“Then why?”

“Because Aaron wanted him to.”

That sentence hurt.

May you like

Vanessa nodded.

This time she did not volunteer to manage the introduction.
