Chapter 13 - VANESSA'S CHOICE

Vanessa resigned from the Bennett family office.

Not because Daniel demanded it.

He hadn't spoken to her in two weeks.

She submitted the resignation to the independent directors.

Reason:

Conflict of interest.

Loss of confidence arising from handling of Aaron-descendant information.

She also surrendered access to family trust records.

No severance dispute.

No dramatic firing.

She still owned her own savings.

Her own apartment.

Her own career history.

She accepted a job six months later at a nonprofit housing group doing operations work.

Smaller title.

Less money.

No Bennett surname on the letterhead.

Before that, she wrote Julia an affidavit.

Not an apology letter.

A factual statement.

Every date she remembered.

Every conversation.

Every document she handled.

Every time Margaret told her to wait.

Every time she chose to wait herself.

Julia's lawyer reviewed it.

Corrected three dates.

Vanessa signed the corrected version.

Then she wrote Mia a separate letter.

Julia did not deliver it immediately.

Her choice.

The letter said:

I told your mother something about Daniel that was not true. You were not responsible for that. You were never the problem adults needed to hide.

No:

I loved you from afar.

No asking forgiveness.

Good.

Three months after the wedding, Daniel agreed to meet Vanessa.

Coffee shop.

Public.

Not romantic.

She sat across from him.

He looked tired.

So did she.

“I am sorry I hit you.”

Daniel nodded.

“You were convinced I cheated before asking one question.”

“Yes.”

“You've done that before.”

She looked up.

“What?”

“Not the hitting.”

He almost smiled.

“You decide what people mean and then act.”

Vanessa nodded.

“That sounds fair.”

Daniel continued.

“You hid Mia.”

“Yes.”

“You lied to Julia using my name.”

“Yes.”

“You signed the trust instruction.”

“Yes.”

“You heard my dad's voicemail.”

“Yes.”

No defense.

Then Daniel said:

“I also handed you too much.”

Vanessa frowned.

“The company.”

“The family.”

“My mother.”

“Every document I didn't want to read.”

She said nothing.

Daniel continued.

“I made you the person who handled ugly things and then acted shocked when you started deciding what I should know.”

“That doesn't make what I did your fault.”

“No.”

Good.

Then:

“But if we ever try again, I don't get to rebuild the same system.”

Vanessa stared.

“Try again.”

“Not marry next week.”

She almost laughed.

“I assumed.”

“Dinner.”

“When?”

“Not yet.”

Fair.

Then Vanessa asked:

“Do you love me?”

Daniel looked at her.

“Yes.”

That was not enough.

They both knew.

He left first.

No kiss.

No ring returned.

No conclusion.

Then Caleb called Julia.

He had found something inside his archive of Aaron photographs.

Not about Mia.

About Vanessa.

A photograph from nine years earlier.

Before Vanessa claimed she had ever heard Julia's name.

Vanessa was in the background.
