Chapter 1 - GOOD. SHE REMEMBERS.

The first thing Daniel Bennett heard was the music stop.
The second was Vanessa's hand across his face.
He had been standing beneath an arch of white roses and pale hydrangeas, halfway through the most expensive ceremony either of them had ever agreed they needed, when nine-year-old Mia Carter walked directly into the center aisle carrying a baby.
The room changed around her.
Guests turned.
The officiant stopped speaking.
Mia was too young to belong in the scene people immediately imagined.
She wore a simple blue dress.
No coat.
No flowers.
The baby rested securely against her chest, one small hand curled near her shoulder.
Daniel had never seen either child before.
Vanessa apparently thought that meant something.
She turned from Mia—
and slapped Daniel hard across the face.
His head snapped sideways.
“What the hell?”
Vanessa shoved him before he could recover.
Daniel stumbled backward into the floral table beside the altar.
A glass vase tipped.
Another slid sideways.
White flowers scattered across the linen.
“You swore there was no one else.”
The guests gasped.
Daniel grabbed the table before it went over.
“What are you talking about?”
Vanessa pointed toward Mia and the baby.
Daniel stared.
Then understood what his bride thought she was looking at.
“No.”
He pushed away from the damaged table.
“Vanessa, I don't know them.”
He walked toward Mia.
Vanessa grabbed the front of his tuxedo.
“Don't.”
Daniel tore himself free.
“Let go of me.”
Mia watched him approach.
Her expression was not accusing.
If anything, she looked confused that he was coming toward her at all.
Daniel stopped several feet away.
“Hi.”
Mia tightened her hold on the baby.
Then said:
“He's not our dad.”
Daniel stopped dead.
Behind him, Vanessa stopped too.
The entire room went silent enough that Daniel could hear one of the floral stems dripping water onto the floor.
“Our?”
Mia glanced down at the baby.
Then back at him.
Daniel took one careful step forward.
He lowered himself to one knee so he wasn't towering over her.
“What's your name?”
“Mia.”
“And who's this?”
She looked at the baby.
“Owen.”
Daniel studied both of them.
Nothing familiar.
No flash of recognition.
No clue.
Then Vanessa rushed forward.
She grabbed Daniel by the shoulder and yanked him back to his feet.
“Stop talking to her.”
Daniel staggered sideways.
“Vanessa.”
She shoved him again.
He took three steps before catching his balance.
Vanessa stepped into the space he had occupied.
Now she faced Mia directly.
Mia did not retreat.
She did not lower the baby.
She simply held him closer.
Vanessa reached toward her.
Daniel moved immediately.
He knocked Vanessa's hand away and stepped between her and the children.
“Do not touch her.”
Vanessa tried to move around him.
Mia looked at her from behind Daniel.
Then said:
“He said you'd remember me.”
Vanessa stopped.
Not angry.
Not confused.
Stopped.
Daniel saw the color leave her face.
That scared him more than the slap.
“Vanessa?”
She stared at Mia.
Her lips parted.
Nothing came out.
Daniel looked between them.
“You know her.”
Vanessa took one slow step backward.
Daniel reached toward her.
She knocked his hand away without taking her eyes off Mia.
Then—
FLASH.
A professional camera fired from the photographer section at the far end of the aisle.
Everyone turned.
One of the wedding photographers stood behind the crowd line.
Dark suit.
Large professional camera pressed directly in front of his face.
No features visible.
FLASH.
Another photograph.
The man never lowered the camera.
His voice came from behind it.
“Good.”
Vanessa stared straight at him.
May you like
The photographer adjusted his lens.
“She remembers.”
