Chapter 10 - THE GUEST VIDEO
By morning, forty-three seconds of the wedding had eight million views.
Not the truth.
The spectacle.
Bride slaps groom.
Girl carrying baby.
“He's not our dad.”
Groom confused.
Mia saying Vanessa would remember her.
Then the photographer:
Good. She remembers.
Nobody online knew what it meant.
They invented everything.
Daniel has secret children.
Vanessa abandoned daughter.
Baby belongs to Aaron.
Photographer is biological father.
Wedding insurance scam.
Julia kept Mia home from school for two days.
Not because she was ashamed.
Because strangers had started using screenshots of her daughter's face.
Caleb had created that risk.
He turned over every original image and signed an agreement prohibiting public use of Mia's images without Julia's approval.
His studio terminated his wedding contract for misconduct and refunded the photography fee.
He remained a photographer.
No dramatic career disappearance.
But Mercer Event Imaging stopped subcontracting him for private family events.
Fair.
Then Margaret made the situation worse.
She called one old publicist.
Without Daniel.
Without Vanessa.
Without Julia.
The publicist released:
The Bennett family is aware of unverified historical claims concerning the late Aaron Bennett. No child was knowingly excluded from any lawful entitlement.
Daniel read it on his phone.
Then called his mother.
“Take it down.”
“It is already distributed.”
“You called Mia unverified.”
“I called the claim unverified.”
“She's nine.”
“Daniel.”
“You don't get to do this.”
“I was protecting the family.”
“From what?”
Margaret did not answer.
Daniel called the publicist himself.
Issued a correction through counsel:
Mia Carter is a minor and should not be publicly discussed. The Bennett family will not comment on her private family or legal status. Prior language was issued without authorization from Daniel Bennett.
No confirmation.
No denial.
Protect the child.
Then he formally removed Margaret's authority to speak for the family trust or holding company.
She still owned her interests.
Still his mother.
No communications role.
Consequences.
Margaret called Vanessa.
“Talk sense into him.”
Vanessa answered:
“No.”
Margaret went quiet.
First time in years.
Then Daniel made another present-day choice.
He withdrew temporarily from voting on any Bennett trust matter involving Aaron's share.
Independent corporate counsel appointed a special committee for accounting questions.
Why?
Because Daniel had received distributions.
Conflict.
He did not need to be guilty to be conflicted.
That decision cost him control.
For once, he accepted it before someone forced him.
Then the trustee found something.
A 2020 internal note from its outside counsel.
Potential descendant of Aaron Bennett identified. Recommend suspension of descendant-sensitive distribution until status resolved.
The recommendation had not been followed.
Why?
A later instruction superseded it.
Signed electronically by:
Margaret Bennett
and
Vanessa Bennett
Vanessa stared.
She remembered signing.
Margaret did too.
The instruction said:
Family counsel advises no legally recognized descendant claim currently pending. Continue administration absent court notice.
No Daniel signature.
