Chapter 7 - THE RECKONING IN THE STUDY

The darkness that followed the silence did not linger. In the bright morning light of the study, the confrontation had passed the threshold of domestic dispute and entered the realm of syndicate justice.

The armed guard at the doorway, a veteran named Thomas who had served Adrian’s father for two decades, stepped fully into the room. He closed the heavy walnut double doors behind him, throwing the internal brass deadbolts with a heavy, mechanical CLACK. He took up a stationary post with his back to the wood, his suppressed weapon held in a low-ready position across his chest, his eyes fixed on Claudia.

Adrian did not look back. He took another step toward the bookshelves, stopping four feet from where his late wife’s sister cowered against the leather volumes.

"Thomas," Adrian said softly, his voice cutting through the quiet like a razor.

"Yes, Don Adrian?"

"Take Miss Vance and the child into the private solarium down the hall," Adrian instructed, his gaze never leaving Claudia’s face. "Place two men at the door. If anyone approaches that wing—including household staff or legal representatives—put them on the floor."

"Understood, sir."

Thomas walked over to Ruby’s mother. The young woman was trembling, clutching the little girl so tightly that Ruby let out a small, confused whimper.

"Come with me, ma'am," Thomas said gently, his gravelly voice surprisingly warm as he guided her toward the secondary service exit. "You and the little one are safe. The Don is not angry with you."

Ruby peeked over her mother’s shoulder as they reached the door. She looked back at Adrian, her hazel eyes wide, pointing a tiny finger toward the floor where her torn quilt lay.

"My blanket..." Ruby whispered softly.

Adrian’s expression softened for a micro-fraction of a second. He nodded slowly to his daughter.

"I’ll bring it to you, sweetheart," Adrian promised, his voice thick with an unshakeable solemnity. "I’ll bring it to you in a few minutes."

The service door clicked shut, leaving only Adrian, Claudia, and the crushing weight of three years of lies inside the high-ceilinged room.
