Chapter 10 - THE RESTORATION OF THE MORETTI BLOODLINE

The room was completely quiet now.

Adrian stood alone in the center of the vast study. The golden morning light had shifted into the crisp, clean brilliance of midday, warming the dark mahogany paneling and the marble floors.

He walked over to his executive desk.

With slow, reverent movements, Adrian picked up the items one by one. He took the faded plastic newborn bracelet and slipped it into his inner breast pocket, resting it directly over his heart. He took the photograph of Julianna, pressing a lingering, silent kiss against the glass before placing it into an antique silver frame on his desk.

Then, he picked up the torn pink-and-white patchwork blanket.

He tucked it gently under his left arm, smoothed the front of his black suit jacket, and walked toward the private solarium at the end of the residential corridor.

He pushed the solarium doors open softly.

The room was bright, filled with lush tropical ferns, blooming orchids, and comfortable white wicker furniture overlooking the rolling green hills of the estate's private gardens.

Ruby’s mother sat on a floral settee, holding a cup of chamomile tea that one of the staff had brought her. Beside her, three-year-old Ruby was kneeling on a soft rug, stacking wooden building blocks into a tall, wobbly tower.

When the doors clicked, Ruby looked up.

Her hazel eyes lit up with pure, unadulterated joy when she saw the faded blanket tucked under Adrian’s arm.

"My blanket!" Ruby cheered, scrambling to her feet and running across the sunlit floorboards, her pale pink dress swishing around her knees.

Adrian dropped to both knees on the rug.

He didn't wait for her to reach for the fabric. He opened his broad, tattooed arms, and when the little girl threw herself against his chest, he caught her with an overwhelming, desperate tenderness that made his entire frame shudder.

He wrapped the torn patchwork blanket around her shoulders, burying his face into the soft, sweet curls of her chestnut hair.

"I’ve got you, Ruby," Adrian whispered, his voice breaking as hot tears finally spilled freely over his cheeks, soaking into the fabric of her cardigan. "Daddy’s got you, sweetheart. You’re home."

Ruby’s small hands wrapped around his neck, hugging him with all the fierce, uncomplicated love of a child who had found her safe harbor.

"I like you, Mr. Adrian," Ruby giggled softly against his neck, patting his cheek with her small hand.

Behind them, Ruby’s mother stood up from the settee, tears of profound, overwhelmed relief streaming down her face as she watched the most feared man in the city weep on the floor of his own home.

Adrian raised his head, looking at the young woman who had raised his daughter when the world had abandoned her.

"Your name is Sarah, isn't it?" Adrian asked, his voice low and steady.

"Yes, Mr. Adrian," she whispered.

Adrian stood up slowly, lifting Ruby into his arms, resting her securely against his hip. The little girl clutched her torn blanket happily, resting her chin on his broad shoulder.

"You aren't domestic staff anymore, Sarah," Adrian said, his dark eyes clear and filled with an absolute, unshakeable vow. "You protected my blood when I was too blind to see the truth. You are family now. You and Ruby will never want for anything in this life again."

Sarah pressed her hands against her heart, nodding through her tears, unable to speak.

Adrian turned toward the wide glass doors of the solarium, looking out across the vast, sunlit empire of his estate. The shadows of grief and death that had haunted these halls for three years had finally been broken, burned away by the light of a child's laughter and the unshakeable truth of a restored bloodline.

Ruby rested her small, warm head against his jawline, watching the birds fly over the gardens, safe in the arms of the father who would burn the world to the ground before he ever let her go again.
