Chapter 6 - THE CONFESSION IN THE SHADOWS

Before Ruby’s mother could utter another syllable of her explanation, Claudia’s composure collapsed entirely.
Her knees buckled slightly, her hands clutching at the leather spines of the antique books lining the shelves behind her. A ragged, hysterical sob caught in her throat, her voice dropping into a breathless, broken whisper that vibrated across the vast room like a curse:
"She was never supposed to find out..."
Adrian stopped breathing.
The study fell into a silence so profound that the ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the corner sounded like hammer strikes against an anvil.
Slowly, with the terrifying, mechanical precision of an apex predator rising to claim its prey, Adrian stood up.
He rose to his full, towering height. His broad shoulders squared; his hands, still holding the photograph and the plastic newborn bracelet, hung steady at his sides. Every trace of the weeping, grief-stricken widower vanished from his features, replaced by a cold, calculating, and lethal clarity.
He turned his body away from the little girl.
He turned toward Claudia.
Across the room, Ruby’s mother gasped, pulling Ruby tightly against her chest, lifting the three-year-old child off the floor as she backed into the safety of the corridor doorway.
Adrian took one slow, heavy step across the marble.
His boots made no sound against the Fior di Bosco stone, but the aura of violence that rolled off him was so thick, so suffocating, that the security guard at the door instinctively drew his suppressed sidearm, his eyes darting to his employer for the command.
Adrian’s dark eyes locked onto Claudia’s pale, trembling face.
He saw it all now. He saw the puzzle pieces that had been deliberately scattered three years ago: the private doctor who had fled to Switzerland two weeks after Julianna’s funeral; the "complications" that had conveniently occurred while Adrian was detained three hours away on an interstate transport crisis; the massive financial trust that Claudia had inherited from Julianna’s estate the moment the lineage was declared extinguished.
"What happened at St. Jude's, Claudia?" Adrian asked.
May you like
His voice was not loud. It was a freezing, subterranean rumble that promised a reckoning far worse than death.
Claudia shrank back against the books, her eyes wide with total, unadulterated terror—as the video cut to black, leaving the billionaire standing over the woman who had stolen his daughter from the cradle.
