Chapter 7 - THE RECKONING ON THE STEPS

Commandant Sterling stood frozen on the wet marble landing, his three stars, command ribbons, and gold aiguillette suddenly looking like worthless trinkets against the stark reality of the federal detail surrounding him.

"You have no jurisdiction on a military installation, Vance!" Sterling rasped, his voice desperate, his hand twitching near his hip. "This is an internal command matter! The Uniform Code of Military Justice—"

"The UCMJ doesn't cover international arms trafficking under Title 18, Section 1956," Agent Vance interrupted coldly, taking a small, black electronic device from his pocket and sliding a touch screen. "Two hours ago, federal agents executed simultaneous search warrants on your private estate in McLean, your off-shore holding accounts in Grand Cayman, and the private warehouse facility at the Port of Baltimore."

Agent Vance turned the tablet screen toward Sterling.

Displayed on the high-resolution glass were live, real-time tactical feeds showing federal agents cutting the locks on shipping containers inside a Baltimore warehouse—revealing hundreds of crates of Level IV ceramic body armor, military night-vision optics, and heavy weapons platforms, all bearing Fort Holbrook serial numbers that Sterling had officially listed as "destroyed in transit."

Sterling stared at the screen. His jaw went slack, his chest deflating as thirty-five years of absolute authority, unpunished corruption, and untouchable power collapsed into ash in a single second.

Two federal agents stepped up the grand marble staircase, their heavy boots striking the wet stone with methodical precision. They carried heavy steel handcuffs and a tactical restraint belt.

Guard Two immediately stepped away from Sterling, raising his hands, while Guard One actively assisted the federal agents by unbuckling Sterling's sidearm holster and handing it over.

"Commandant Marcus Sterling," the lead agent declared, pulling Sterling’s arms behind his back and snapping the steel cuffs onto his wrists with two loud, echoing CLICKS. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit treason, theft of government property, and attempted murder of a federal witness."

The personnel gathered across the courtyard—the shift workers, junior officers, and mechanics—watched in stunned, absolute silence as the three-star commandant was forced down the wet marble steps, his head bowed, his uniform damp with freezing sleet.
