Chapter 10 - THE ROAD TO WASHINGTON

The three-vehicle federal convoy pulled out of Fort Holbrook's main gate, their high-powered LED headlights cutting through the blinding whiteout as they hit the open interstate heading north toward Washington D.C.

The snow was falling heavier now, blanketing the highway in four inches of untouched white powder, but the heavy armored Suburbans rolled smoothly over the ice, their tires gripping the asphalt with unstoppable momentum.

Inside the lead vehicle, the air was warm, quiet, and safe.

Maya leaned her head back against the leather headrest, closing her eyes as the steady, rhythmic hum of the V8 engine vibrated through her seat. The split on her lip stung slightly under the medical salve, but the exhaustion that had weighed on her soul for fourteen hours was finally lifting.

She knew the coming weeks would be filled with grand jury hearings, high-level congressional depositions, and intense media scrutiny as the full extent of Sterling's military black-market network was exposed to the nation.

She knew her name would be splashed across every military newspaper in the country.

But sitting in the warm cabin, surrounded by the people who had backed her when the darkness seemed absolute, Maya felt no fear. She had stood on the wet marble steps in the freezing sleet, stared down a three-star general and his armed guards, and refused to break.

The convoy accelerated into the storm, its flashing red-and-blue tail lights disappearing into the swirling white canvas of the Virginia night—leaving the corruption of Fort Holbrook far behind in the icy darkness, carrying the truth toward the light of the capital.
