Chapter 4 - The Broken Connection

The silence in the private dining room grew so heavy that even the soft rustle of Victoria’s red silk dress sounded like thunder.
Emma stepped closer to the edge of the dark wood table, looking directly into Ethan’s dark eyes. The anger that had protected her for seven long years was suddenly replaced by a devastating, hollow clarity.
"My calls to you were blocked," Emma said, each word deliberate, clear, and ringing with absolute truth across the marble floor.
Ethan stared at her, his brows pulling together in a sharp crease. "What are you talking about? I never blocked your number."
"I called you from the hospital, Ethan," Emma said, her voice wavering as tears glistened at the edges of her eyes, though she refused to let them fall in front of Victoria. "I called you the night I left. I called you every single morning for two weeks straight while I was staying in that tiny motel room on the coast. Every time I dialed your number, an automated operator told me the line was restricted from reaching your device."
"That’s impossible," Ethan said flatly, though the conviction in his voice was rapidly crumbling. "My phone was with me 24/7. I checked every missed call. I checked every voicemail."
"By you," Ethan repeated, as if trying to re-anchor himself to the story he had believed for seven years. "You blocked me first to cut ties."
"No!" Emma asserted firmly, taking a step toward him. "I didn't block anyone! I thought you had changed your number. I thought your family had forced you to cut me off, that you decided I wasn't worthy of being part of your elite world, so you deleted me from your life!"
For the first time in seven years, true, paralyzing doubt appeared on Ethan’s face. His dark eyes flickered as he looked at Emma’s pale, earnest face. The story he had told himself—that Emma was a gold-digger who abandoned him when his father threatened to disinherit him—was disintegrating before his eyes.
He instinctively glanced back at Victoria.
Victoria was standing two steps behind him, her hands clasped tightly over her designer clutch. Her cheeks had lost their flush, her posture rigid as she stared at the dark polished wood of the table, avoiding Ethan’s gaze entirely.
"Ethan, darling," Victoria interjected quickly, her voice high and slightly strained as she reached out to grab his sleeve. "She’s lying. She’s just trying to confuse you and create a scene before your father arrives. Look at her—she’s desperate."
Emma didn't waste another second arguing. She looked down at Noah, whose big brown eyes were filled with confusion and fear as he clutched his small dark backpack against his formal black vest.

"Come on, baby," Emma whispered gently, grabbing Noah’s small dark backpack off the empty chair and reaching firmly for his hand. "We’re leaving."
"Emma, wait," Ethan called out, his hand reaching out reflexively as if to stop her, his cold mask completely shattered.
