Chapter 3 - Seven Years of Silence

The space between Ethan and Emma seemed to shrink, heavy with the weight of unresolved history and unspoken grief. Victoria stood beside Ethan, her hand tightening over his arm as if claiming ownership, but her eyes darted nervously between the two of them, sensing a shift in the air she couldn't control.

Ethan took another step forward, his tall frame blocking the warm light of the chandelier overhead, casting a deep shadow over Emma.

"You came back after seven years for this family," Ethan said, his voice bitter and accusation-laden. "You waited until I was engaged, until my life was settled, and then you used my father to slide right back into the life you walked away from."

Emma stared at him, a bitter, tragic laugh threatening to escape her throat. "You truly believe that, don't you? You truly believe I just woke up one day, packed a bag, and decided to walk out on you?"

"That’s exactly what you did!" Ethan snapped, his cold demeanor cracking to reveal the raw, unhealed scar beneath. "You left without a note. You left without a word. I spent weeks searching for you. I called until your number stopped working!"

Emma froze.

The blood seemed to drain entirely from her face. Her hazel eyes widened in genuine, stunned shock. Her hand, which had been resting protectively on Noah’s shoulder, went completely still.

"You... you called me?" Emma whispered, her voice barely audible over the quiet hum of the room's grand piano in the background.

Behind Ethan, Victoria suddenly went completely still. The subtle, haughty stance she had maintained melted into a rigid, defensive posture. Her eyes widened slightly, and her breath hitched in her throat as she stared at the back of Ethan's head.

Ethan frowned, catching the genuine confusion in Emma's eyes. It wasn't the reaction of a woman caught in a lie; it was the reaction of someone whose entire understanding of reality had just been shattered.

"What do you mean 'did I call you'?" Ethan asked, his voice losing its harsh edge, replaced by a growing, uneasy hesitation. "I called your cell phone dozens of times every single day for three months after you left. It went straight to a dead tone. You blocked my number."

Emma shook her head slowly, her eyes searching Ethan’s dark face for any sign of deceit, finding only genuine, long-festering hurt.

"No," Emma breathed softly, her voice trembling as a terrifying realization began to settle over her. "No, Ethan... I didn't block you."
