Chapter 5 - THE CONTENTS OF THE PURSE

Adrian’s heart slammed against his ribs like an iron sledgehammer.

Daddy.

Four years ago, James had died. Six months before his death, James had spent three weeks at the Cole family’s coastal retreat in Mystic, managing a marina logistics expansion while Adrian was tied up in London. James had returned from Mystic quiet, distracted, and transformed, refusing to answer Adrian's questions about who he had been spending his evenings with.

Emma had arrived at the Cole estate in Connecticut two years ago, seeking a live-in housemaid position. She had brought a two-year-old daughter with her, claiming her husband had passed away in a road accident in Rhode Island. Adrian had approved her hiring without a second thought, delegating domestic management to Mrs. Holloway.

Adrian slowly stood up to his full, six-foot-two height.

His broad frame cast a long, dark shadow over the little girl sitting on the marble floor.

Nora, unbothered by the heavy atmosphere, knelt on the polished Calacatta marble floor. She set her bright pink plastic purse flat between her yellow shoes and popped the small plastic latch open with a sharp snap.

Emma saw the purse open.

Her face drained of every remaining drop of color. She looked as though she were about to faint.

"Nora!" Emma gasped, her voice dropping into a desperate, strangled whisper. "Don't! Please!"

Nora reached her small, delicate hand deep inside the plastic purse, her tiny fingers searching beneath her plastic lipstick and wooden toy keys.

Adrian didn't look at the purse. He stood like a stone pillar, his dark, piercing eyes fixed entirely on Emma. He watched the way her hands shook, the way tears began to pool in her dark eyes, the way her entire body trembled with pure, unadulterated terror. She wasn't afraid of being fired. She wasn't afraid of breaking estate rules.

She was terrified of the truth.

"Emma," Adrian said, his voice dropping into a register so dark and commanding that Mrs. Holloway subconsciously stepped back into the dining room. "What is in that bag?"

May you like

Emma closed her eyes tightly, two hot tears spilling over her lashes and tracing wet paths down her pale cheeks. She didn't answer. She couldn't.

Nora’s tiny fingers closed around an object at the bottom of the purse.
