Chapter 2 - THE FROZEN HOUSEHOLD

Mrs. Holloway, the estate’s strict, fifty-eight-year-old head housekeeper, stopped dead in her tracks in the doorway of the dining room, a tray of silver cutlery suspended in her hands. Two footmen carrying morning deliveries near the main entrance stood motionless.
No one in the Cole estate had heard Adrian Cole laugh in four years.
The sound was warm, resonant, and entirely real. As Adrian laughed, the hard, icy lines around his mouth vanished. A distinct, deep crease appeared at the outer corner of his left eye—a small, familiar physical trait that transformed his cold, intimidating face back into the man he used to be.
Emma slowly turned away from the mahogany vase. She stared at Adrian, her hand trembling as she pressed her polishing cloth against her pink apron.
Her smile did not return. Instead, her face drained of all color, her lips parting in silent, agonizing shock.
When Adrian laughed—when that deep crease appeared beside his left eye, and his shoulders relaxed into that effortless, warm posture—Emma did not see the billionaire executive. She saw James. She saw the man who had sat across from her in a small, rain-slicked diner in Mystic five years ago, laughing at her terrible jokes, pulling his silk tie loose, and looking at her with those exact same dark, warm eyes.
Adrian, sensing the sudden, unnatural stillness radiating from every corner of the foyer, caught himself. His laugh tapered off into a quiet exhale. He cleared his throat, adjusted his light-gray suit jacket, and quickly restored his usual guarded, stoic expression, though a faint hint of warmth lingered in his eyes.
Nora, still standing in the center of the marble floor with her plastic purse clutched against her yellow cardigan, pointed a tiny, triumphant finger directly at him.
"You laughed," Nora announced proudly, her big brown eyes shining.
Adrian looked down at the tiny girl. The heavy, dark mood that usually governed his mornings had dissolved, replaced by a strange, magnetic curiosity.
"I suppose I did," Adrian admitted, his voice dropping into a soft, low register he rarely used with adults.
Emma stepped forward, her voice tight and breathy as she tried to intervene. "Nora... sweetheart, come here right now. Mr. Cole is busy. He has work—"

"It's fine, Emma," Adrian said calmly, raising one hand slightly to hold her in place.
He didn't return to his tablet. Instead, the billionaire CEO of Cole Logistics did something no member of his board had ever seen him do: he dropped down onto one knee right on the cold marble floor, bringing himself down to the four-year-old’s eye level.
